And the crowd said.... "yawn"

Michael Laws, Mayor, Wanganui, Phillipa Baker-HoganWe'd like to report that a shocked New Zealand took a moment to take in the news that Wanganui would soon be Mickeyless and then burst into a chorus consisting of half lamentation and half pleading him to come and make a Mickey out of their little corner of the land.

We'd like to, but we'd be fibbing worse than a Mayoral press release. Because the reaction to the news that the Ditch would, from next year, no longer have a Diva has been muted to the point of inaudibility.

David Farrar, who's displayed a confusingly ambivalent attitude towards Mickey in the past - given that Farrar and an associate once got into a spot of bother for issuing a press release claiming Laws had been assassinated and police were interviewing several thousand suspects - did announce the news on the excellent Kiwiblog.

Interestingly Farrar - who first encountered Laws back in the latter's National MP days - agrees with our cautious approach to celebration:

Laws Watch are not celebrating yet - they think it may be a feint. I have no reason to doubt it. Speaking as someone who personally quite strongly dislikes Laws, I don't think he was all bad for Wanganui. Small town Mayors often need to be a personality, and Laws did that. I suspect he would have been re-elected if he had stood, but am not aware of any polls which would indicate either way.
Since Kiwiblog has a larger and arguably less biased readership than does LawsWatch, we've left that post to percolate a few days and now bring you a hand-picked selection of the finest comments:
  • Laws has a toxic personality who did not work well with others. He never has. I knew him 100 years ago at Parliament and he was odd then. He has softened since then but the basic irritating personality remains. If you cannot work with others in politics you will get nothing done. Michael seems not to grasp this point.

  • Oh yes never forget the old Antoinette Beck 'signature fib' .... talk about gone by lunchtime ...themz where (sic) the days !!!

  • I can't stand big egos, but Laws had some great policies which I would love to see other parties embrace. He held referendums to decide policy, and he also when the situation demanded it adopted a firm commonsence non P.C. position. We need more like him.

  • I'll stick my hand up and say I like him as well.

  • He is a dad then he is my friend too. Good luck to him whatever he does in the future.

  • Like him or hate him, under the current political climate we need more people like Michael who are unafraid to publicly debate contentious issues.

  • I don't think Michael Law's latest break from politics will last very long. Spending more time with the family? Yeah right!

    He'll be bored stiff.

Like Tim Shadbolt he'll get "withdrawl symptoms" and scour the country searching from some provincial town to brighten up. Timaru? Upper Hutt? He may even go for the Auckland City mayoralty. Well why not? The media attention is almost unlimited, what with the transport problems and stadium fiasco. I'm sure Laws will be in his element having a go at the ARC and most of Auckland cheering him on.

In the meantime here are a few suggestions for Laws to fill in those spare 60-hours or so a week, once he retires as Wanganui Mayor next year.

He can get his own talk show on one of TVNZ's new digital channels. Perhaps a NZ version of "Jerry Springer". Or why not combine travel show with reality TV and let Laws holiday in Tonga where he'll be running for his life from a lot of very angry strapping Tongans who may well take offence at his "brown slug" tribute to their former king. Or he could team up with infomercial queen Suzanne Paul and use his considerable persuasive skills to hook us onto a new range of "non-run" mascara.

Anyway I'm sure the possibilties are endless for Michael Laws and we'll be hearing more from him.

  • I would never say that I always agreed with Laws but the NZ political scene will be far worse off without him.We need more like him, men who are not afraid to state an opinion and men who are not afraid to stand up to the sisterhood.

I particularly liked his blunt and accurate comments earlier in the year about Cindy Kiro, nobody else (apart from perhaps John Banks) would have the guts to say what he said even when they are right.

  • Laws is a failure in politics and I think Michael might just begin to appreciate that. In democratic politics you have to convince a majority of people to support you. This is something Michael can never seem to do. There is an art to getting people to support your case, flattery, pressure, incentives. Michael has one technique which is to say I am smarter than all of you, so support my case or I will jump up and down and insult you with my sharp tongue. How can a person like that succeed in politics and Michael simply does not of course. Clever, sharp brain, dumb politician.

  • I was surprised to see him saying he would step down, he seemed to be the kind of guy who would slug it out to the bitter end.

I think the "Laws Watch" people should get a life, these types of people like attacking politicians but they all have their own agendas and politics that they bring into it. I tend to be very suspicious of people like that setting up websites to peddle their little pet cause.

Laws is an abrasive fellow and the value of his contribution to Wanganui can be questionable, like Banks and some of those other outspoken people who seem to make it from national to local politics these days.

  • "I would never say that I always agreed with Laws but the NZ political scene will be far worse off without him.We need more like him, men who are not afraid to state an opinion and men who are not afraid to stand up to the sisterhood."

There are lots of people around who can do that without being abrasive and deliberately offensive like Laws is. His comments for example about the King of Tonga are about as useful and in a way analogous to that idiot who set fire to his car outside the King's Auckland residence.

  • One needs to make an important distinction between people who have strong opinions yet are able to work constructively with people and those that aren't. Laws does not have a constructive track record in politics at all, like Winston Peters.
Interesting that there's a common thread in those comments that are unsupportive of Mickey - that he's incapable of achieving anything meaningful because he's far too abrasive to work with others. Little wonder, then, that he attracts support on LawsWatch from people like this:

To anon at 8.35pm. Then you stand for office, you tosser. Scared? Laws has beaten everybody he's confronted these past 2 years.
9:58 PM, November 16, 2006
So the hallmark of a successful politician is that he "beats" people and makes opponents "scared"? Not that we've ever met anyone who's actually scared of Mickey - just those who approach a political battle with him as one would an excrement-hurling contest. With Mickey standing down we can only hope anon finds someplace to live where he or she will feel more at home. Sadly, the choices are narrowing as despots everywhere are being overthrown, but we're sure Kim Jong Il has room for someone who considers beating and scaring people to be positive attributes in their companions. If not, contact us and we'll refer you to a competent Dominatrix.

Coming back to our somewhat muted reaction to the "big announcment", it seems the same game is being played out in Christchurch, according to the goss at Molesworth & Featherston, who report that:

The rumble from the semi-South is that Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore is about to rescind his decision not to seek another term, and declare his hand as a candidate again. It is not clear exactly why ... it might be feels he was pushed into the decision in the first place, or more likely he is under pressure from the left who fear a centre right candidate (Bob Parker or George Balani again?) would be more attractive to the conservative instincts in the Garden City than Christchurch Central MP Tim Barnett if he wound up as the left’s first choice.
Refusing to stand for office only to be "reluctantly" dragged back to politics by your supporters is a ploy which goes all the way back to Pompey the Great in 71BC and has been used by hundreds of politicians since, so we won't be writing him out of the Mayoral ballot till nominations close.

Then again, gratuitous trouble is, as Jane Clifton accurately nailed in "Political Animals", Mickey's raison d'etre. How much more fun to sit at the Council table and make gratuitous trouble for your successor, for no other reason than to "prove" how much more effective it was to rule by diktat and intimidation than to try to reach genuine consensus.

Reading the comments on the last post, it sounds like two Bloody Sundays in a row for Mickey and the Dwarves.

First, the good burghers of St John's Hill trashsed the Heart last week and last night an assorted mix of students, creatives and others roared with approval when told by an out-of-town "celebrity" to "get rid of your F----ING Mayor.

Does McKinnon really think that she's got a hope of stepping into Mickey's shit-covered shoes, especially after her starring role in the code of conduct whitewash?

PS

The statuettes were wonderful last night, especially the mayoral award of the horse licking its own arse, but shouldn't there have been one of My Little Dotty also licking Mickey Mare's arse?

Anonymous said...

Phew ... looks from the council's website that Mickey has at last given Mas something to say about the Heart meetings.

It goes like this, Mas: "Mickey says blah blah blah ...."Mickey says blah blah blah ...."Mickey says blah blah blah ...."Mickey says blah blah blah ...."

Isn't that just ticky boo? You don't have to venture out and risk hearing what anybody but Mickey says.

What a guy, eh? You've got the best boss in town, somewhere up there at 101 Guyton St. Don't take any notice of the (new) pretender in the editorial suite at Taupo Quay, will you ... or your"real" boss might turn all ornery.

Incidently, wouldn't it have been more appropriate for the mayoral prize to have been an ass licking its own ass?

Dot MocKinnon must be feeling pretty stink, I expect. Think back three years, Vision must have been coagulating around then. Mickey's telling her all this cool stuff about how she'll be Wanganui's first female mayor. Fast forward to now. Mickey's bringing out the faint praise while (rumour has it - Mickey loves those) backing Bogan.

It's like walking shit all over someone's carpet, Dot. It's not your shit, you didn't mean to step in it let alone tread it into the rug, but there it is, all brown and smelly. Now why don't you scrape the Michael off your shoes and help us clean up this mess? You might even get some respect if you do it now.

New song by that old Dung Beatle Mickey McCartney Laws:

Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love

I'll buy you a nice big prize my friends if it makes you feel alright
I'll get you anything my friends if it makes you feel alright
'Cause I’m a loathsome creep who thinks that money can buy me love

I'll give you all my salary if you say you love me too
I need to buy your votes you see so what I’ve got I'll give to you
'Cause I’m a loathsome creep who thinks that money can buy me love

Can buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can buy me votes too, oh oh oh

I’ve got a wife who loves my dough so she stands by my side
She loves the Strip and Surfers too, I keep her satisfied
'Cause I’m a loathsome creep who thinks that money can buy me love

The bowlers take my cheque and say that they don’t mind being bribed
But some of you are just too smart, it’s you that I can’t buy
'Cause I’m a loathsome creep who thinks that money can buy me love

Maybe ML ran a discreet survey to check if he stood a chance next term? If no chance - then he chose to get out now with an honourable excuse rather than lose? Whatever... good ridance to a part-time City ambassador, he can do what he does best and stick to being a ego-tripping critic.

Well, this is my first and probably only time on this site. I've been told to check out the comments regarding the Bad Horse Video Awards.

As President of the Trust that runs the awards i guess it should be my voice that responds to some of the negative feedback.

Mayor Laws did donate $1,000 of his money for the top prize. Of that, we are grateful. The council have also lent their support via the Impact Fund. Of that we are grateful too. The mayor hardly provided the real dosh behind the event which has managed to run for 8 previous years without his knowledge. The Trust is not run by UCOL students or any students for that matter. As for entries consisting of solely UCOL students and wankers....there may have been 2 or 3 that made up the final 26 videos.

We are an independent organisation. We cannot or will not control the opinions of other people (hence our position that videos submitted can be of any subject the entrant wishes). If we are to be slandered with the tag of "two-face" for not subdueing and gagging a free speaking person, then i accept that tag.
The overall prize winner was from Wellington and thus was probably not aware of the petty arguments raging in this year. Thus he accepted the award in the spirit in which it was given...for having the best Bad Horse Video.

Mickey discovers consultation.

Mickey Mayor, the worthless loon, today discovered consultation. In his e-coli today he asserts: "Indeed the response from the public meeting – and even the harshest criticism from the usual council critics – is proving very useful. It is identifying gaps in information and stressing where we might need to do more work before next year's referendum."

It's called democracy, you fuckwit Michael. That you have no concept of its workings is made clear by your comments.

The fact that a system beyond his limited ken might actually work obviously comes as a surprise to this mayor. No wonder he's labelled incompetent.

We've been highlighting what he's done wrong for over a year. But if you don't want to trawl the archives, we'd recommend this post which was contributed by two long-time readers and which summarises, better than we ever could, the whole sorry history of Mickey's reign.

He has revived civic life in wanganui and brought real interest and life back into this city. If/when he goes, everyone will be the poorer including his critics who have ptobably never felt this kind of emotion since being rejected by their prom night date.

As for giving dosh to the video awards - good on him. There was obviously nothing in it for him other than supporting a good idea. I'm glad he gives his salary to such causes instead of pocketing it like all the rest. Very honourable.

We should all be so generous.

Everyone local thinks so and everyone is sad he's standing down.

We should call the SETI folks and alert them to the first ever transmission verified from a parallel universe in deep space, received right here at LawsWatch at 6:52 AM, November 22, 2006.

That obviously gives us naming rights for this place where sulphorous gases and massive gravitational pull mean only one creature has evolved the ability to survive by sticking his head up his arse and breathing through his intestines. And only one example of the species exists.

However, this sad solitary creature populates his imagination with everyones and really believes they're all sad he's standing down.
Thanks, Mickey for sending us this communication from Planet Laws in your distant galaxy in your parallel universe. Pity its spinning out of control and that you're heading down a black hole.

McKinnon makes belated push for credibility

It's official, Deputy Doh! reads Lawswatch. No sooner had an anonymous commenter suggested she "scrape the Michael off her shoes and help us clean this mess up", The Deputy Mayor writes: "We are blessed with the variety of artistic enterprise we have in Wanganui. I urge you all to take the time to enjoy our local art"

She takes time out from licking arty ass to remind us that Mickey never attends civic events, then gives a nod to the green vote by announcing that she's off to see "An Inconvenient Truth".

"Anonymous", who appears to have been thrust into the spotlight by this sudden promotion to head of Dotty's brains trust, was unavailable for comment, but issued the following statement: "That little weasel would say anything. She is corrupt beyond the ability of words to describe".

A question for Reuben Shalome: Did the impact fund deliver the full $10,000 grant as published in the Chron?

Good to see some sense on this site from Rueben Shalome - the main organiser of the Bad Horse Awards.
I applaud Michael Laws's generosity on this occasion - but some of the comments posted on this site are disrespectful and unhelpful to the organisers of what was a most enjoyable event for those who attended. I am told that Deputy Dot did a very good job on the night- diplomatically recognising the Mayor's abrasive side, but also delivering on the role expected from a civic leader.
Well done Rueben and the team.

The Chronic’s hospital hysteria, driven by Mickey’s mate Solomon, provides an interesting contrast to its cowed silence on the exodus from Guyton St under the fuhrer and the hopelessness of trying to recruit people like senior planners to come to town to work in a place known at councils throughout New Zealand to be dysfunctional, demoralised and dreadfully understaffed.

Who needs The Two Ronnies when we’ve got The Two Julians doing their comic routines down at Guyton St? Did you hear the one they did about the Swings and Roundabouts, aka The Mythic Million difference between the estimated cost for the river crossing upgrade for the sewerage scheme?

You see it went like this. Julian H (he’s the finance joker) had to explain how they’d managed to stuff up their estimate for the cost and be out by a mere million (give or take) when the tenders came in at $1.66m and $1.99 million.

According to the minutes, “In answer to a query from Cr Higgie regarding the difference between the estimate … and the actual tender price, Julian H explained there were big swings and roundabouts in the wastewater project.”

Which no doubt had Higgie madly nodding and grinning and saying how very very nice it was to have Mickey’s pet comedian in charge of the ratepayers’ millions. Surely it’s time for: "It’s good night from him … and it’s good night from him."

So let's say he does "top the polls". He'll be the most voted for local Councillor and DHB member for Wanganui. Whoo hoo!

No, it's real. It's nothing new, however. Bullshit politicians (just like Michael Brian Laws) sold our national birthright for a mess of pottage years ago. It's going to take a miracle if our health services can survive the attack being made upon them by international pharmaceutical dosh.

Laws on the DHB will be the quickest way to finish off Wanganui's health service and that might be why he wants to be there. Having Dot, Baker-Hogan or Rangi Wills (latest possible heir to the throne)wearing the mayoral chain would assure the city's drowning death by debt but the coup de grace could be administered quicker and more spectacularly if the health service suffered a complete melt down and who better to do that????

How do you suppose the story of our hospital's problem with neglected paperwork made it onto the front page of the SST? The hospital is supposed to have told the Chron about the problem but asked that they wait until the patients affected had been contacted before they ran the story. So Saturday, Solomon's rather over-dramatic (but much welcomed) announcement that he's simply had enough and Sunday that story appears in the very paper for which his good buddy Micky writes a column. I don't know. How do you suppose they got the story?

Once again “The Latest from Laws Watch” crew have compiled a well documented newsletter that so eloquently describes the various comments of Laws' supporters and opposers (I being on the side of Laws Watch).

While reviewing the comments of the Laws supporters, I had to wonder of the education level of these people, which obviously appear quite low, to inquire where they buy their drugs from, or, if at the time of making their comments, whether they had taken dose of extra strength “Stupid Pills“. I would recommend a lobotomy for some and a close to lethal dose of common sense for the rest.

To the individual who stated that “ I think the “Laws Watch” people should get a life,…….” My response to that individual would be, “Wake up and smell the coffee”.

When I went to Wanganui to visit with some friends of mine, I inquired if they fully understood what the “Heart of Wanganui” project entailed, and, the “ballooning debt” that Wanganui was in. I also asked if they understood the of Options 2-6 “Total Costs” displayed in the “Heart of Wanganui” pamphlet.

You’d be surprised that they really didn’t have a complete idea. After I explained things in more detail, they were totally against the “Heart” project and were ready to “draw and quarter” their “darling” mayor Laws. I explained that the total cost of a construction is not fully known until 80% of the construction is completed. That the pamphlet “Total Cost” were --Estimates-- and not total costs.

One of my friends was somewhat of a “hard case” mentioning to me that Laws had done more than the previous mayor. And that Laws did reveal mismanagement of city’s monies from the previous mayor. I explained to him that --all-- succeeding politicians will reveal shortcomings and embezzlement of the person before them. I had to school him on politics and explained of the existing Wanganui money debt and the “Heart” project. I did succeed to “convert” him away from “the dark side”.

Also, mind you, that this “educate the people” (propaganda) of the Heart of Wanganui project cost the city a good “chunk of change”. Please review the news article from the Wanganui Chronicle below:

Heart of city bills hits $250,000

The Heart of Wanganui project has so far cost ratepayers $250,000.
While the bulk of that money has been paid out, there are still some charges still awaiting approval. Among these are the cost of printing and delivering the Heart of Wanganui pamphlet that was delivered to every household in the council’s district.
The latest breakdown has been provided by the Wanganui District Council’s chief executive officer David Warburton.
Excluding the costs of printing and delivering the coloured brochure, costs of $232,554 have been incurred through architects fees and surveys, as well as the cost of council staff time spent on “administrative purposes.”
A total of $212,418 has been paid to a number of architects involved in the project with another $4000 for the company which provided estimates for the concepts that have now been made public.

Council has estimated another $9208 in staff time has been spent on “administrative purposes”.

The remaining $6927 is bundled into the “miscellaneous” column. Spending in this area covers travel and accommodation costs, along with $1655 in survey work at Queens Park carried out by Opus, and $2000 to another company to prepare a conservation plan.

Five architectural firms or individuals have been involved in the Hart project to this point. Payments have been made to:

+ Pete Bosley Architects - $105,330. This includes a payment of $36,206 awaiting approval for the stage two conceptual designs, 3-D animation and graphics.
+ Mitchell and Stout Architects - $92,300. This includes a payment of $25,886 awaiting approval for the stage two conceptual designs. + Tony van Raat - $6853.
+ Athfield Architects Ltd - $4731 + Architectus Auckland - $3204. + Rider Hunt Terotechnology – $4000.

Architectus Auckland specialises in urban design and planning, whole Rider Hunt Terotechnology is a global company specialising in construction costs. It has an office in Palmerston North.

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws, along with some district councillors and a handful of senior council staff, have begun a series of public meetings, explaining the Heart of Wanganui concepts.

After the public meeting round, the project will take its next step as part of the next council referendum, probably in the second quarter of 2007.

I found the issue of the ““Miscellaneous” cloumn” matter interesting:

The remaining $6927 is bundled into the “miscellaneous” column. Spending in this area covers travel and accommodation costs, along with $1655 in survey work at Queens Park carried out by Opus, and $2000 to another company to prepare a conservation plan.

I wonder if the citizens of Wanganui were properly consulted of the cost involved?
I believe that at the right time, Wanganui needs to be reminded of how much of a snake that Laws is. I think that the “Code of Conduct Investigation of the Alleged Breaches of the Code by the Audit & Administration Committee Wanganui District Council of 24 June 2005” should elevate their thinking.

I found a minor flaw regarding the BoRA 1990 that Mr. Laws failed to mention.
I believe that had this been mentioned against Laws‘ declaring his “trump card“ of his right to freedom of expression:

“In the General Comment on Article 19 it was stated that it is “the interplay between the principle of freedom of expression and such limitation and restrictions which determines the actual scope of the individual’s rights” (OHCHR, 1983)
Several pieces of legislation, aimed at promoting racial harmony, defending public morals, enhancing social responsibility, protecting children, and protecting individual privacy and reputation, limit the scope of freedom of expression in New Zealand.”

A keen attorney could have “turned the tables” in favor of the complainants.

++++++++++++

Now why would anyone who has watched this self-promoting fool wreak havoc in Napier, Wellington or Wanganui (not to mention his time with student politics and debating) "stop and think he genuinely wants to help?"

You're wasting our time again, Mickey, so bugger off.

At last the Chron has gotten close to the truth on the sordid self-serving stirring of Mickey and Clive ... but they predictably buried the story quoting Ian Powell in the bowels of the paper and splashed Mickey's poos all over the front page. Fairly typical.

The old adage about if it ain't broke don't fix it doesn't apply to the Chron's main man. Where the ATROCITY of Guyton St is concerned, it's a case of "if it ain't broke, break it quick and then try to claim the credit for fixing it".

Nice letter in the Chron this morning about talkback Mickey being dicked on his own radio show then using the old 'I was misquoted' line -- the last refuge of liars and conmen.

Good of the Chron too, to hand him the right-of-reply banana skin then let us all watch while he dicks himself, for good measure.
