Promises and lies

Three long years ago, Wanganui mayor Michael Laws convinced himself that people’s memories were so short he could rise again from the ashes of his ignominious failure in national and local politics. He worked his Svengali magic on the likes of Nicki Higgie, Marty Lindsay and John Maslin then booked the 830-seat Opera House for the Vision Wanganui lunchtime launch. And from the clutter of zimmer-frames and wheelchairs on the St Hill St pavement, it seems the lure of an hour’s free operatic entertainment was sufficient to draw a good number of the aging Bob Walker’s friends from their rest-homes, though not to keep them from their midday naps (see picture above).

And what an appropriate venue our grande dame of opera was, as the castrato boy-who-would-be-mayor warbled his way through the lamentably overwrought libretto for the debut performance of diVisionii’s Promesse e bugie (that’s Promises and Lies to you, Bob! - Ed) which needless to say brought the house down among the Vision Wanganui fan club at the Chronicle editor’s office that night.

But oh how the Diva of the Ditch has fallen! After three long years of screaming abuse at Wanganui citizens and council staff, his once powerful castrato voice has lost its range and he’s reduced to performing diVisionii’s 2007 operetta Più Promette e si Trova (that’s More Promises and Lies to you, Bob! - Ed) in the 200-odd seat Davis Lecture Theatre. Or, Watchers are suggesting, is it really a case of mayoral cold feet?

The Diva has done enough polling by now to know that the citizens of Wanganui are weary of his promenading and performing, and they’ve certainly had more than enough of his Vision Wanganui promises and lies. So like a fading Dame Nellie Melba, the Diva of the Ditch has wisely chosen not to risk playing to an empty and cavernous Opera House for the last stop on his Vision Wanganui political farewell tour.

STOP PRESS: LAWSWATCH PROVED RIGHT ON THE MONEY AGAIN ... NOT EVEN MAS COULD HIDE THE FACT THAT WANGANUI MAYOR MICHAEL LAWS WAS REDUCED TO RANTING TO A PRACTICALLY-EMPTY VENUE AT THE VISION WANGANUI 2007 LAUNCH. FORCED TO ADMIT THAT 'A LITTLE LESS THAN 40" (It's time the boy reporter was sent back to school for a basic lesson in countable nouns and their appropriate adjectives - Ed) FRIENDS, RELATIVES AND BOB WALKER'S MOTHER IN LAW COULD BE LURED OUT OF THEIR RETIREMENT HOMES. IN FACT AS MAS FOUND OUT, MICKEY'S PROMISES AND LIES ACTUALLY OUTNUMBERED HIS AUDIENCE.

And from the August council minutes, two snippets follow on the Who pays the piper theme from last week’s post (see the sordid tale below of how Randhir Dahya learnt to blow for Vision):

Before members of the public were excluded from the meeting, Mayor Laws thanks John Maslin, Wanganui Chronicle Newspaper journalist, on behalf of the Council for his accuracy in reporting the Council’s meetings during this term of the Council. Mayor Laws said it had been a boon to the Council to have a veteran professional reporter. He hoped that Mr Maslin’s appointment as Council reporter would continue following the upcoming triennial election.

… and lest anybody lucky enough to win Mr Quigley’s Events Lotto should think there are no Vision strings attached, we came across this little gem in which Ray Stevens leads the way in suggesting a nifty little cost-cutting ruse for the election ‘celebrations’, much to MickeyMayor’s delight:

Cr Stevens suggested that as the Council had previously funded jazz festivals, the jazz band entertaining at the Riverfront Boardwalk and Upokongaro Jetty openings should provide its services free of charge. Mayor Laws agreed and asked Mr Quigley to follow this up.

In response to comments at the end of last weeks blog, only a complete moron wouldn't recognise that Mickey and Spot are exploiting their access to the council web site "Headlines" in an obvious attempt to inflate their public profile and mana. Lets see them post some headlines saying they fucked something up....!!! I'm sure that won't happen in the next few critical weeks.

Anonymous said...

So John Quigley now finds himself engaging in extortion as Vision+Ray's enforcer. What a sad and sorry end to a once-promising career in foreign affairs, but he can't say he wasn't warned before he decided to venture in Visionland!

Any other Wanganui households who play the Simpsons game of arguing whether MickeyMayor is more like Charles Montgomery Burns at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant or Mayor Quimby will be watching with bemused horror as our Mad Mayor latches onto going nuke as the way forward for Wanganui (see his wee rant in today’s Sunday paper).

The answer, it seems, is that he’s about to become a genetically modified Quimby-Burns hybrid. Perhaps he was accidentally exposed to toxic amounts of radiation at birth, which would explain a lot!

Anonymous said...

Nuclear Power for Wanganui. Just the job! It can go on the next referendum along with the velodrome extravaganza and the Heart of the City.

‘THE PEOPLE’ will love it and the reactor can go in the back garden of #3 Porritt Street. Problem solved. Another Vision triumph!

Yep and Virgin Blue will fly all the boffins and scientists in and out to keep the plant going; subsidised at huge cost to the Wanganui ratepayers of course (just like the Wanganui Airport Operation......!!!!).

Anonymous said...

Mickey asserts that "the French have discovered a process that entraps the nuclear outfall and lasts longer than the waste itself".

So why do they ship so much of their radioactive waste to Russia?

Perhaps it's because the so called breakthrough technology doen't work.

"This could lead to swelling, loss of physical strength and possible cracking of the mineral as soon as 210 years, well before the radioactivity had decayed to safe levels, said lead author and Cambridge earth scientist Ian Farnan."

Once again Mickey gives us a useless lie from a worthless loon well out of his depth.

A nuclear accident in Wanganui would do wonders for his profile.

Mayor Laws said it had been a boon to the Council to have a veteran professional reporter.

*******
Bet there were pursed lips among the councillors who have been consistently censored out of Mas's very selective recording of three years of council affairs.

Anonymous said...

To be fair to Mas, he’s done a much better job than the over-priced Spin Fairy ever did for Mickey’s profile… and Mickey had to top up her salary!

Anonymous said...

The mayoral bathroom at Guyton St would be a good place for disposing of the nuclear waste from Mickey's Porritt Power Plant - it would hardly be noticed amid the pile of toxic crap that has been spread around there in the past three years!

Anonymous said...

Seriously, how would it be possible to defame Michael Laws? Even if he sued you and you lost what court would award more than $1 in damages?

He's been a shit mayor, everyone knows that. He's corrupt. Everyone knows that. No amount of insincere outrage can change either of those truths.

Why do you suppose the closing date for submissions on the long-awaited Council Tree Policy is Friday, 12 October, 2007? Isn’t that the same day that voting closes? This could really mess up that submission process.

As an aside its interesting to see the latest move to squeeze more space for the ever increasing Council staff numbers.Dr Warburton seems to have forgotten his need to cut costs by reducing staff, as the latest round of job adverts hit the Vacancies columns. Who knows what the total FTI numbers are now compared to 3 years ago?

Yes but Mas can't count, can he? He'll probably need to ask Mickey how many turned up.

The figures and information about the Council's Building Services activity were released under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987.

Thus lies Mickey on the WDC website as he releases his latest piece of electioneering propoganda.

Wasn't it meant to be council policy to include the names of anyone seeking info under the act to Mas et al? Mickey wasn't shy three years ago about his incessant demands for info so why is he so shy now?

Oh that's right -- things have turned badly to shit for him this campaign and he's driven himself underground. Poor sad bugger.

I went to the vision launch and surprised there werent more people but it was during working hours and in a tucked away place and wasnt advertsd well. I think wanganui know what theyre getting with vision adn are happy and don't need to go along. Excellent all the same and great candidates.

Anonymous said...

I reckon the attendance at the re-standing Mayor's campaign launch - less than one person for every thousand in Wanganui - is an excellent result......for Wanganui !

Anonymous said...

"A little less" than 40 people turned up for the Vision launch.

The numbers stack up like this:

20 mental patients and Radio Live listeners.

6 people who will never vote Vision in a million years, but turned up looking for ammunition.

2 journalists - in the loosest possible sense of the word

2 photographers

1 janitor

1 security guard

For a grand total of 32. Which is a little less than 40, you will agree.

Your number's up, Mickey you worthless loony.

During the last financial year (July 2006-June 2007), the Council handled 1801 consents. This compares with 2120 in the previous 12 months from July 2005. This is a drop of 15%.

So what does the Council website say? "Building activity in Wanganui continues to boom."

Why is Michael Laws allowed to use ratepayer resources to tell his lies? Is it because he's irredeemably corrupt and has so manipulated processes at WDC the whole organisation is failing? I think so.

Just saw the videos there from you tube - they are brilliant! No wonder Mickey is going mental. Presumably he's the model for the nasty little ice cream stealing bully in the silent movie.
Not so good though to see the cheeky darkie movie is up there too - Wanganui's embarrassment recorded for prosterity. But at the same time hilarious to see the lying bullshitting little creep squiriming and wriggling when he was eyeballed by Ray Stevens.

Why the energy? If everyone is right then John Martin will win the mayoralty easily. ML seems to know that because there is nowhere near the same campaigning as 04 and all the Vision ads are on getting their new candidates promoted.

Laws is going through the motions and he is not even doing the Community House mayoral forum according to one of their people.

There may be no shortage of incompetent reporters around, but surely only Maslin is actually sufficiently bent to be able to say THISl

"In Referendum '05 the riverfront redevelopment received the second highest ranking of all 14 items included in the referendum."

WITHOUT SAYING THIS:
And the public were told it would cost just $260,000.

JUST WHEN IT SEEMS THE CHRONIC'S INCOMPETENCE CAN'T GET ANY WORSE, THEY DECIDE TO HOLD A CANDIDATES FORUM THEN FORGET TO TELL ANYONE ABOUT IT. If only they'd pull their collective head out of the mayoral backside long enough to realise there might be some readers out there who want to know what candidates other than the Chron's favourite mayor think and say ...

FYI: THE MAYORAL CANDIDATES FORUM STARTS AT 7PM AT THE PRINCE EDWARD AUDITORIUM, COLLEGIATE.

(Wonder if Mas will bother to turn up, or if they'll send Loopy Lin instead ....

"Mayor Michael's here ... yaaaaay!!" a small group of Randhir Dahya's whispered at the mayoral forum"

Hardly, she's got too many sick kids to look after ... remember? Obviously that's why she's trying to swap the Horizons salary for the DHB's dollars. That way she can just drop the kids off for a bit of surgery during meetings. Puurrrfect, eh Leo?

Lin Ferguson is the Chron’s new secret weapon in its war on competence, so it’s no surprise that she learned her ‘trade’ at the Southland Times whence comes the newish incompetent editor MacNicol.

Until today Ms Ferguson’s most memorable line was about Chester Borrows. Remember this unforgettable piece of pap?

“Even though he admitted to feeling a bit knackered after his morning s activities, the tall politician with warm, hazel eyes and a ready laugh insisted on putting the kettle on and making a cup of tea”.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who missed the forum this evening passed up the chance to listen to Mickey explain how the $31.5 million we owed in 2004 was actually less than the $67.5 we now owe and the $48 million peak we were predicting in 2004 for 2010 has now actually been reduced to $74.6 million. It was surreal

Tonight’s mayoral forum illustrated clearly that we have a two man race. Russell Fleming is a joke and Randhir showed us all how badly he is out of his depth. Ms Osborn chose not to attend, but sent a heckler to represent her.

What the Chron didn't say this morning was that it didn't take long for the editor to abandon her presence of neutral chairpersonship and give ML a second crack at a question. Sure, he went through the motions of appearing to throw a wobbly at her but it was plain he was going to get his own way. Why should Monday night be any different to any other day of the week?

Laws was really in cornered rat mode last night. The sneering/shouting/snarling act probably made some of the Visionaries think wistfully about a change of mayor. While Russell Fleming turned out to be a worse buffoon than expected, one couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for Randhir.

He was so clearly out of his depth and fumbling ... then with his quote about how "when he is mayor" he'll appoint the highest polling as his deputy he went and spilled the beans on his three bitter years and the deal that Mickey dangled before him to get him to make such a dick of himself by standing for mayor.

If he wasn't so old, you'd want to tell him to grow up!

Bullshit. We went along hoping to make up our minds and we particularly wanted to hear from the female candidate. Where was she. I still havent made up my mind but ML won the night from where I was sitting in the front. JM spoke well tho. The poll report in the paper is rubbish. Obviously there were more Martin supporters among the 120 people (how many thousand people in Wanganui?) than there were ML supporters. Nothing more than that. Chronicle should take a real poll instead of farting about adn misleading people

Last nights debate was very interesting. I am an undecided voter and I thought Laws would walk all over Martin last night. It was a perfect showcase for all his political and debating skills.
In my opinion Martin beat him fair and square, he behaves like a Mayor, he had great presence , took everything Laws had to throw at him and kept his composure throughout.

Has anyone ever complained to the Chrons parent company over their lack of effort when it comes to uncovering facts?

I don't think I'ver known a newspaper to blindly mirror what they are told to say as the Chron does.

The other members of the Vision party might be starting to realise that Michael Laws brand of politics may not get them a council seat. If they want to make a difference around the council table it might be a good idea for them to declare that they could work with any of the Mayoral candidates.
