Follow the money

Michael Laws, Mayor, Wanganui, Dancing with the Stars, television, TV
A week is indeed a long time in the hit-and-run politics practised by the mayor of Wanganui. It’s just over a week since Michael Laws launched his assault on the Government-funded tourism MRI (Major Regional Initiative) designed to develop international-standard branding and promotion of the attractions of the Ruapehu, Rangitikei and Wanganui districts.

Many Watchers have found remarkable similarities between this episode and the shameful Sarjeant Gallery campaign with which Mickey commenced his reign of terror as the Mad King of Wanganui two and a half years ago.

Both involved:

  • Mayoral abuse of individuals who were voluntarily giving their time, expertise and passion for good causes.
  • Mayoral abuse of the ratepayer-funded Council website to dance around the lines of defamation.
  • Hysterical demands for the resignation of individuals concerned.
  • Much ado about 'confidential' minutes.
  • Dumb and complicit silence from council CEOs and others like, in this case, Cr Murray Hughes.
  • The whole thing fuelled by the willingness of the Wanganui Chronicle (with John Maslin acting as chief propaganda minister) to run Mickey’s press releases under the biggest headlines while leaving any attempt at balance coveraged for later, and smaller.
As some Watchers have noted, Wanganui’s Mickey Mouse mayor briefly went quiet, retired to his hole, chewed his tail and planned his next assault on decency and democracy. The Chronic got around to running some stories from the other side (notably, though, by reporters other than Michael Laws' one-trick pony John Maslin) and even, today, an editorial attempting to be balanced. Then Mickey burst out of his hole this afternoon and upped the ante by pretending his madness might be taken seriously by the Auditor General.

But no doubt the "victims" of the MRI tirade, principally its chair Uwe Kroll, are now wondering, "what the hell was that about?!" Similar rhetorical questioning is no doubt taking place in the minds of those, like David Cairncross and Bill Millbank, who were left in the Sarjeant wreckage and are now reconsidering the worth of volunteering their time and expertise in future.

As one commenter has advised LawsWatch, when you’re looking to explain the apparently inexplicable actions of Michael Laws, it always helps to follow the money. And once again, the money trail seems to lead to Mr and Ms Flim-Flam's (a.k.a. Mickey and Sally Patrick) grand Heart of Wanganui folly.

Way back in late 2004-early 2005, when the Heart was no more than sketches on a paper napkin left behind after Mickey and Sally met for coffee at Indigo, it would have been apparent to a blind mouse that the Sarjeant extension plan, with its generous dollop of government dosh, could not be allowed to progress if Mickey and the then-librarian were to push their mega-million dollar library-museum-underground carpark scheme past an unsuspecting public. By now Watchers should be chanting, pantomime-like: "Follow the money!!"

Fast-forward to February 2007 and there’s a referendumb on Sally's and Mickey’s Heart project looming, not to mention another election. Mr Flim and Ms Flam know their cockamamie scheme is in for a hiding as some hard questions begin to be asked about funding arrangements. Vision has shaken dry just about every council piggy bank Mickey can get his hands on, from mayoral relief funds to prime land assets, so the MRI money box (with its cool $2 million), must be looking pretty attractive right now. Especially since it seems some of that dosh will be headed the way of the Waiouru Army Museum multi-million dollar expansion when according to Mickey’s "me me meeee!" brand of illogic, it should be tossed with gay abandon at his delusional Heart.

So, just as the Sarjeant extension had to go – and went, amid a hail of bullets and corpses – Michael Laws will doubtless have seen the MRI’s democratic processes for allocating the cash from its piggy bank as a threat to the Mickey-Sally Flim-Flam Inc museum-library-carpark. He may even really believe that he can convince the government to disband the MRI and give him the keys to the piggy bank!

So where’s the harm in that, Watchers? Consider the damage that’s been done to Wanganui’s reputation as a result of this bout of mayoral madness. And it’s not just about Michael Laws, who’s headed for a dose of his own medicine at the ballot box in just over seven months (further headline-chasing cheap publicity stunts notwithstanding) because the stink of institutional rot at 101 Guyton Street will linger long after he’s danced off the scene.

CEO Dr David Warburton has shown an astonishing degree of complicity in allowing the council website to be used to put the ratepayers in jeopardy of civil action and Michael Laws even seemed to be pointing the finger at his CEO in the matter of the leaked MRI minutes.

Forelock-tugging Vision lackeys like Murray Hughes may not have the good sense to flee the wreckage of their inglorious time in power and leave Wanganui to get on with the job of rehabilitating its reputation, but others can see this for what it is - just another step in Wanganui’s journey under Michael Laws to pariah-dom … a rogue district that cannot be trusted or liked by its fellow councils or governments or government funding institutions and is the object of ridicule and contempt wherever thinking people gather.

How can "Muzza" Hughes show his face around Wanganui? Oh tht's right, he doesn't have to because it's permanently hidden up Mickey's bum!

Well that's that taken care of! I'll bet the Auditor

John Maslin's articles are the highlight of my daily read! They are mostly nonsensical and so poorly written that I can't help but cringe and laugh out loud. I noted in the weekend that he had been relegated to the MotorParade, but even then his article on the new luxury Holden was hilariously incoherent.

I've started cutting his articles out and sharing them with friends.

And apparently he used to be the editor! Please tell it me it's not true!

Mickeys DWTS absence could be good for WDC. Apparently the latest "employee survey" shows moral at an all time low.
Word has it that the latest results are the worst ever.

Mickey comes up with another grand scheme and X number of staff have to run around doing the donkey work. Minutes from management meetings that were once freely available to staff are now off limits (That could be down to Laws or Warburton).

Its quite sad, I asked a WDC employee about the workplace... and they checked over both shoulders and then quietly told me that the place is a nightmare - you'd have thought I asked them about illegal activities!

Mickey says (about Barmy Borrows gang patch bill):

"There will be massive national interest in the passage of this bill,” Mr Laws said.
*******

So that's it then. While Crs Bullock, Westwood and Stevens are thinking about things like the Bill of Rights, Mickey as always sees the whole exercise as another step in his development from prominent local person to New Zealand's version of Anna Nicole Smith, ie famous for being stupid and famous. Wonder why he doesn't just get on with it and get himself a good bust augmentation surgeon? He'd look so fabulous with a 62D.

John Maslin's subjectivity needs serious investigating. Really. I don't thik LawsWatch should be writing for or editing the Chronicle (though the odd op-ed would be nice), but Maslin is so very clearly a stooge for the council and panders to Laws' considerable ego. It's really a serious problem. The people of Wanganui deserve better.

If I read another article by him beginning 'Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws has slammed...'

...

Anonymous said...

Lawswatch is right about the Chronicle's obvious bias and it permeates today's page three stories about council stuff.

Contrast the gang patch bylaw story which is all about Mickey, Mickey and Mickey. Way down the bottom Crs Westwood and Bullock get their names mentioned but nothing about what they might have said in opposing this latest mayoral publicity fest.
('Writer' is John Maslin)

Now look at what happened when Hopeless Higgie blathered on intermibly as she cranks up her re-election campaign ... the big headline, a huge chunk of Higgie says, a picture of the grinning fool.

(Again, not surprisingly, the 'Writer' is John Maslin)

It's a wonder the advts for news staff in the paper don't require applications to be sent straight to Mickey!

I’d just like to say that having attended the MRI function yesterday this is really something out of the ordinary and that everyone should really be getting behind it. It has been a huge achievement for the chief executive and board to get this far, forging a consensus between so many disparate interests and producing a truly magnificent and enchanting promotion for this part of the world that for so long has been overlooked.

If only the mayor wasn’t so spiteful and took the time to look, listen and learn. If he reads this perhaps he will stop and think about the harm he is doing … and perhaps Cr Higgie could do less talking about trees and have the courage and decency to disassociate herself from her leader’s campaign and apologise to those who have worked so hard only to be publicly attacked like this.

Anonymous said...

An independent thought from Murry Hughes will have seasoned Watchers reeling in amazement. Hughes, as an ex- tourism/travel operator himself, actually knows something about the subject, whereas the only expertise Michael Laws' has is in the field of gobshite.

Yeah right!!! It must have been just after that meeting that Mickey splashed around his latest bunch of crap about embarrassing everyone by going to the auditor general. Did Hughes stand up at yesterday’s MRI meeting and apologise, distance himself etc or did he just sit like the gutless hollow man he is?

FIRST STEPS TOWARD NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL OF GLASS

Mayor Michael Laws guided Wanganui glass representatives towards the ultimate goal of a New Zealand School of Glass at a meeting on Monday, February 26.

Yes by all means put your trust in this man, glass people. Just look at the way he's leading the Whanganui tourism industry to the promised land by pissing off everyone who gets covered with his shit, even including his own councillor and former lackey Murray Hughes.

Be assured Michael Laws will in his usual spirit of self-effacement and self-sacrifice represent your interest with diplomatic subtelty and mature negotiation skills .. . just look at his record and throw yourself on the nearest kiln because you're buying into a whole heap of pure gratitous recreational trouble from someone who knows no other way.

Regarding RMA's letter, here's a thought about Virginia Lake and the stormwater outlet in question.

If it's a stormwater overflow outlet, as I understand it is, then surely it requires stormwater before it overflows.

We haven't had any substantial rain in Wanganui for literally months.

Doesn't that make it obvious that the stormwater outlet has nothing to do with the lake water? Perhaps it is the unusually long hot and dry spell that has caused the discolouration?

Just a thought. Maybe John Maslin could 'write' an article on it...

In view of Mickey’s bright idea about running off the Auditor-General over the MRI he’ll find it quite easy to re-use the ‘template’ for the overdue and badly needed inquiry into the Wanganui Inc debacle. So when can we expect to see this mayoral press release appearing on the WDC website:

Issues with Winc to go to Auditor-General

Mayor Michael Laws today said that neither he nor the council had received a satisfactory explanation to the issues raised relating to Wanganui Inc’s overspending of $180,000 in just six months last year, and general failure to deliver its objectives, "and there is little option but to approach the Auditor-General to determine issues around accountability and conflict of interest".

"My motivations are simple. First, to ensure that both taxpayers and ratepayers’ monies are being spent appropriately. Second, to ensure that Wanganui gets a fair share of the vast amounts of money that have been pumped into Wanganui Inc over the last 18 months."

Mr Laws summarised the outstanding issues as:
1. The delay in the Wanganui’s 'branding' exercise and the failure of Wanganui Inc to deliver the brand within its budget;
2. The 'public lie' of Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws and Ron Janes that Wanganui Inc was the solution to lifting Wanganui’s profile nationally;
3. The conflict of interest of Mr Laws in that he sits on the Winc board and uses it to fund his pet projects like mayoral miles and Boxing Day flops;
4. Winc’s failure to deliver a successful Boxing Day concert with resulting $70-90,000 bail out required by WDC;
5. The undue emphasis upon events marketing in current product design and branding;
6. The lack of accountability and poor reporting by the chairman Ron Janes to WDC;
7. Winc’s overspending by $180,000 in the six months to Dec 31 2006;
8. Obtuse, incomprehensible, amateurish and inconsistent branding exercises like that in the Central Hawke’s Bay newspaper apparently relating sparsely populated beaches, or that in the DominionPost claiming Wanganui was less than two hours from Wellington;
9. Failure of to adequately manage the glass facilitator with resulting unfortunate consequences.

Anonymous said...

In reply to anon 9.34pm
Yes, it is a stormwater overflow, and yes, it has,nt overflowed since the winter - but the issue is that when it overflows it contains stormwater that is contaminated by fertilizers and detergents etc that raise the nitrogen and phosphorous levels of the lake. Then when the lake water temp rises to about 25C there is a reaction that forms the algae bloom. There is no practical solution to the current algae bloom other than to wait for the lake water to cool.But this is only the short term solution as if the nutrient levels maintain the current level or continue to rise not only will the same algae bloom occur next summer- but all fish life will eventually perish.
The overflow pipe is the only new inflow into the lake - why is'nt the WDC publishing the nutrient level test results of both the lake and the retention pond, and why is'nt the Horizon's councillor for ST John's Hill taking a personal interest in this very serious environmental issue?

Here’s King Mickey Canute less than three months ago:

Castlecliff Beach grooming will start now - 13/12/06

Mayor Laws said the council rejected the idea that Castlecliff Beach should revert to nature.
"This is a beach and waterfront that has historically been open and accessible. That is the way it will stay."

Now here’s Dotty $25,000-plus and three months later:
… I do wonder how long we can continue to fight nature (and at what cost).

If he had he'd hardly be welcoming an inquiry by the Auditor General (Yes, Watchers, sit down before clicking the link or you'll fall over - the Chron has a version other than Mickey's and it's by John Maslin).

Amongst Kroll's more telling comments: "Unfortunately, Wanganui’s mayor has again shown a complete lack of understanding of the MRI, the makeup of the board and the balance of the project collateral" and "contrary to Mr Laws’ claim, board member Craig Woolliams did not own a tourism business in the Ruapehu".

Tsk tsk, Mickey, not another libel, surely?!

Kroll is incredibly naĂ¯ve for someone in his position, though. Mickey fully understands the MRI and the issues surrounding it. He just chose to dump excrement on it for what he thought would be his own advantage.

I wonder what names Quigley and his dizzy offsiders would be called if it wasn't Flaws that put them (and our $) there in the first place.

Given that the WDC logo was created by an Auckland "friend" of a winc staff member, a "friend" who does logos as a hobby, you'd think that Flaws would keep quiet about logo creation lest some ask how much rate payer money went to this "friend"

Folks, our very own Morgs is none other than the new, improved, reinvented resurrected, reincarnated ANTOINETTE BECK!!!

And Mickey will be most proud of his new protegee as he/she is off to a flying start with the Hunter-Bell name appearing on ... not ONE but TWO "Mayoral Surveys".

It goes like this, Mickey tells Antoinette (sorry Morgs) to cobble up some questions and send them off to the pensioner housing inmates under the heading "Mayoral Survey - Pensioner Housing" and to the CBD businesses under the heading "Mayoral Survey - CBD secturity".

The they come up with lots of words that Morgs has never heard of, like "issues ran a veritable gamut" and with the CBD security report, this little gem:

"The results were staggering, even at face value."

Oh well, it helped Mas keep Mickey's name in lights over a slow news period and now we have the Mayoral Surveys to go alongside the Mayoral Mile, the Mayoral Wank, the Mayoral Bullshit and other great vote-winning events.
