The worm's turn

When even the Chron takes notice of something which doesn't paint Mickey in the most positive light, it's a sure sign something is up. So even John Maslin couldn't resist noting that whilst Mickey was having yet another hissy fit at the MRI in a blatant and ultimately futile attempt to justify his earlier criticism, he was shot down not only by Muzza Hughes (who actually represents Wanganui on the MRI and thus might know a little more than Mickey about what went on) but by Dotty.

"The Wanganui District Council is not the only player in this and, Michael, we know you have your view on this" said Dotty. Translation: you've embarrassed us enough with other territorial local authorities Mickey, now be a good boy and belt up.

This sudden show of bravery might actually be admirable if it wasn't purely motivated by Dotty's now desperate need to distance herself from the handbasket headed for Hell which is diVision. Even the likes of Randhir Dahya, Don McGregor and Rangi Wills have occasionally choked on the garbage they've been fed. But Mickey has always been able to rely on his dumpy chorus line of Don McGregor and Nicki Higgie, with Sue Pepperell in the backline from Wellington and Phillipa Baker-Hogan trying to sing solo from the wings so as to keep her distance from the melee on stage.

No matter what the provocation - be it abuse of female Council staff, failing to attend civic functions and expecting her to fill in, or insisting she be a human shield during the Code of Conduct hearings - Dotty has stood by her man.

Only now, when he's made it abundantly clear that he won't be standing by her; that the three years of abject humiliation have all been for nothing, has the worm realised she won't be getting her turn at the Mayoralty after all.

It's pique and political expediency which have led to this independent frame of mind, nothing more. Dotty has been used and cast aside, yet she was a willing participant the entire time - no doubt laying back and thinking of the Mayoralty. To expect admiration for her "independence" now underestimates the intelligence of the electorate - and there's no better illustration of that than the fact that even the pro-Mickey commenters here are following the lead of their idol and consigning Dotty to the scrap heap.

And so ends another political career of someone foolish enough to align themselves with Michael Laws...

"The only reason the numbers down a bit at the Mayoral mile was because of the weather."

A bit?? 1500 to 1000?

"The danger is that the next Mayor won't put his/her hand in his/her pocket to continue this event."

I'll settle for them keeping them hands in their pockets so long as they keep their nose to themselves and 2 feet inside WDC chambers.

Well spotted, anon @ 9.05. That was a deliberate test to see which of our readers were paying attention ;-)

It strains credulity to think that there will not be differences within any group on policy issues. My reading of the council minutes suggests that the mayor quite often doesn't get his way.

It also strains ceedibility to suggest a barefooted hillbilly like John Martin will defeat deputy dot come October.

Guess what Mickey, you have no ceedibility here or anywhere else so don't bore us with your misguided sense of your own importance.

John Martin will lose because he had bare feet. Of course he will. Your genius will be the end of us all. Damn you're clever. Where do I get intelligence like yours?

Have you ever considered entering the ridiculous fool of the month award?

Anonymous said...

Martin was managing a billion annual budget in his last job...
anyone checked his cv ?

So many people have said to me that they would have voted for John Martin but following his (barefoot picture)words in the paper that indicate he would undo all ML's work and take us back to Chas's day, has changed their minds. What is he thinking! Many who weren't ML fans to begin with are disappointed he isn't standing again and worried about the next Mayor.

Ah, but with Deputy Dot in the hotseat, that means the looming, brooding presence of Dick behind her. And who'd want HIM representing the city at a civic function....

Anonymous said...

If the Mayor and sponsors put dosh up for Events then they deserve recognition and any 'hoo haa' they may require. To suggest otherwise is totally naive. There may be a profile built from it..so what, thats how the world goes around. Theres no deception in that surely.

So, you spend your social time discussing Wanganui politics aswell as your blogging time. Are you perhaps the most boring loser in the history of Wanganui?

Do people make a bee-line for you to tell you who they're going to vote for all the time?

Go on, put your name forward for that ridiculous fool award - you'll win that by a landslide every time.

What a prat.

That's right, there's no deception in that at all.

There's contempt, and ridicule, and being called a total ponce, though. Are you Michael's pimp?

*****************************************************

The mayor put 10 thousand each year towards the race, the ratepayer has put 15 thousand on the first year and other 60 thousand this year, not a good return for the city.

Er, thats not the Mayor's dosh though is it. It's the ratepayers money. He takes his wage ,( telling the ratepayers that he doesn't ) and then spends it on self promotion, dishing it out to who he sees fit
which generally means any event laws sponsors with our money has to have the word Mayoral in front of it.
Pretty sneaky really

I like this posting but I'm surprised, Lawswatch, hasn't discussed the Mayoral Mile and it's lack of support from the community.

ANon said "If the Mayor and sponsors put dosh up for Events then they deserve recognition "

All very well but the Mayor got the Council to underwrite the event for $64800. He put in $10,000, they hoped to get another $10,000 from ticket sales etc leaving the ratepayer funding the rest providing everything went to budget( unlike the Boxing Day Concert). Now , I attend most athletics and cycling meetings and the plain truth is that if the competitors dont have their mums and dads watching there would'nt be a crowd. The Mayoral Mile is not a formula for mass participation- unlike say the Round Lake Taupo Challenge which attracts 16,000 starters and as many again supporting. Why - because Taupo is A a challenging event , and B it is also a relay attracting teams of starters. Why would anybody travel to Wanganui to jog 4 times around Cooks Gardens. Quite frankly if any promotor went to the Council with a plan to run an athletics type meet and asked for $64800 backing they would be laughed out the door. No economic case could be presented that would support ratepayers funds going into such an event- unlike the Masters Games for whom the Council comes up with only $40,000 each two years. I dont see that the Mayoral Mile has a future if Michael Laws is not there railroading his Vision councillors into voting for it.

Laws Watch said...

Perhaps you're also surprised, anon, we haven't discussed the weather? ;-)

Because the lack of support is as self-evident and predictable as the precipitation. It is, as commenters have aptly noted above, a publicly funded (yes, publicly via the Mayoral wage) event with the sole purpose of aggrandising Mickey. That it receives little support is hardly surprising.

Whereas there's just the slightest chance that someone might fall for Dotty's new found "independence", not realising that there's a bloody great dagger between her shoulder blades bearing the fingerprints of one Michael Brian Laws.

Anonymous said...

And Mickey stabed Doty again just last night.
A number of people were invited by "The Mayor and Mayoress" to attend a function at the Council from 5pm to 7pm to do with the glass leadlight windows for the Council Chambers.

Well BUGGER me guess who didn't turn up and left it all to a very un-amused Dotty.

Laws you are a plonker.

Anonymous said...

Vinsen, you loser. when did YOU ever bankroll anything out of your own pocket? Weren't you unelected because a) you wanted to sell the WDC's pensioner housing and b) attacked the mayoress for not attending a meeting when she was ill in hospital?

your credibility is on an even lower rung than the barefooted weordo that is John Martin.

And John ... you are known by the company you keep.

Anonymous said...

Laws has given $30,000 according to the Chron to the Mayoral Mile and from his own pocket. Good on him - when did any of you losers give any of your own money to anything in Wanganui that might benefit the wider community?

That is right. Never.

As for promotions: I saw two TV crews there and the Dancing with Stars stars so that is prime time promotion for a very cheap outlay isn't it?

Anonymous said...

Dancing with the Stars: the biggest media event to hit Wangas since Moutoa Gardens.

Only one person could give our city that profile.

Laws Watch said...

We know we've been doing this for too long when we have trouble trying to figure out whether anon @ 7.32's comment is tongue-in-cheek...

Anonymous said...

Anon at 5:57, 6:10 and 7:32.

You just don't get it do you? "Profile" comes from genuine acheivement, and you can't buy that whether you spend $30,000 or $30,000,000.

Mickey is hoping desperately that some of Wanganui's richness and beauty will rub off on him. It won't, but that won't stop him making a laughing stock of himself trying.

The best firms don't advertise. Don't try to understand that, you haven't the wit.

Anonymous said...

Why is it not called the Wanganui Mile, rather than being called the Mayoral Mile?

Anonymous said...

Yes, that's right dorkhead.
Advertising doesn't work ... you moron. Stick to trying to making your benefit go further.

Anonymous said...

Dancing with the Stars.
It will be HUGE for Wanganui and everyone I talk to is very excited.
Well done, Michael.

Laws Watch said...

To those anons who are claiming DWTS will somehow benefit Wanganui as opposed to Mickey personally, we have one question: How's ACT rating after Rodney's appearance?

(Not sure? Check here).

Just as when we saw Tim Shadbolt on DWTS and thought of Invercargill - so when ML is on DWTS everyone will think of Wanganui. Not to mention the filming of Wanganui. Every time ML is on the radio and people hear him they think of Wanganui. How can even you losers think that this is bad for Wanganui.

Anonymous said...

IT must be VERY frustrating for Mickey that those dumbos at TVNZ don't see the value in renaming Dancing With the Stars to

"The Mayoral Dancing Thing".

Why are you and the diVisionites the only ones who get this stuff, Mickey?

Anonymous said...

Whoever said that in Mickey's absence the Council's communications people go silent?

In keeping with their training of running stuff every day on the website about thick brown smelly stuff oozing through the district and causing maximum headlines, they've been doing a loverly lot of Lahar Updates!!!

...when we saw Tim Shadbolt on DWTS and thought of Invercargill - so when ML is on DWTS everyone will think of Wanganui...

Even assuming you do speak for everyone, anon, you still haven't pointed to a single measurable benefit to the organisations fronted by the desperate dancers. We've shown you polling that illustrates ACT didn't get a single point from Rodney's effort. They might have thought of ACT, that didn't mean they'll vote for it.

So even if you're right and eveyone immediately thought "Invercargill" as soon as Tim stumbled into view, did one single additional tourist decide to go there as a result?

"Cancel the week in the Bay of Islands, darl, we're going to Invercargill instead - I might catch a couple of Parks Committee meetings and see if the Mayor does a jig".

A quick random word association test round the cave associated "Tim Shadbolt" with "Bullshit and Jellybeans". We suspect Mickey is more likely to elicit in people's minds an association with the former part of that title.

Anonymous said...

Lawswatch, you know that's an insult to Bulls :)

So who's the watcher with the foot fetish? Cant quite get the connection between choice of foot attire and suitability for the office of Mayor.
Doesn't the present Mayor greet guests to his office in lycra shorts and running shoes?
So who cares what people wear on their feet, its the ability to do the job that really matters come election time surely.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how many businesses have come up with the cash to sponsor a window in the Council Chambers?
I cant believe even this Mayor would be so rude as to issue an invitation to potential sponsors under his and the Mayoresses name and then fail to show.
Speaking of the Mayoress, has anyone seen her around, her Horizons workmates certainly havent seen her for more than an hour or so all year so far.

Weordo (sic)

That reminds me of a song.

I once knew a girl
Such a Peach
Such a Pearl
Whose unfortunate name was Weordo

And then folks who can't spell
Would serve ten shades of hell
To my love
My dear darling Weordo

For you see
When they came
All up asking her name
And she'd tell them
The truth an' no more

They'd mangle it first
And then make it worse
By mispronouncing the moniker

The moral is this, take a pause
Take the piss
But please try to spell these things rightly
Cause otherwise you'll find yourself up the creek backwards
With Mickey and Dotty and Wanganui.

Any guesses on how much those 1500 suckers will each end up being subsidised by the ratepayers ... not to mention how much each coffee cost.
