Walking the plank and jumping ship

It’s hard not to feel sorry for Ron Janes, Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws’ erstwhile captain of enterprise – unless of course you’re a victim or member of the clean-up squad after his last foray into public service at the Wanganui Hospital Board. Or you may be one of those who believe that anyone, like Ron and the Visioneers, who thinks dancing with Mickey is the path to glory and riches deserves everything they get when the ship goes down.

You see, poor old Ron’s valiant efforts for the Vision cause was a nice little earner for him as chair of Wanganui Inc, presiding over Mickey’s events city meisterplan and fiddling while the ratepayers’ cash burnt at hopeless mayoral headline grabbers like the Boxing Day concert and mayoral mile.

How frightful, then, for Ron to hear from not one but two Chron reporters (and the sub-editor who gleefully reminded readers that the Chronic had been the first to tell Ron about the mayoral press release on the Council website) that like the souls he’d sacrificed in his slash and burn health system days, he too had been declared surplus to requirements:

THE news that Wanganui District Council has asked for the immediate resignations of Wanganui Inc directors as it takes control of the economic development agency took newly deposed chairman Ron Janes by surprise.

Mr Janes said he was used to business being conducted face-to-face and not in the way he was informed when the Chronicle rang yesterday to get comment.

Mickey knew the Winc game was up before the leftover Christmas turkey was cold, as LawsWatch was told by an anonymii conveniently privy to the innermost workings of the mayoral mind. But we’re now hearing the decision to pull finally pull the plug on Mickey’s merry band of Winc men came from none other special sub committee chair and mayor-in-waiting Dot McKinnon. that’s appropriate because it was Dotty and her sub committee that built the Winc golem in the first place and let it loose in the council coffers.

Moneybags Mickey, meanwhile, rides in on his white horse and tells us that $800,000 will continue to be tossed at ‘economic development’ (read events) by an increasingly well paid branch of the new boys’ network called Wanganui Holdings. But, says Mickey, ‘the estimated savings from the revised structure were between $65,000 and $95,000 a year’. Not even enough to cover the losses on the Boxing Day concert.

As we wait with bated breath for Deputy Dot to start covering herself in glory and pointing her electioneering finger at her ‘triumphs’ at the business end of Vision’s woeful term, it’s also worth noting a wee paragraph buried deep in the Chron(ic) story reporting (ex) Chairman Janes’s surprise at not being told he’d been given the boot:

Former director Nygllhuw Morris had already resigned two weeks previously: “I think Winc will be able to move forward, and I totally support them.”

So we can assume that Mickey had a word with his buddy Nygllyhuw, even if he didn’t have the bottle to pick up the phone and ring Ron. And Nygllhuw, doubtless with an eye to candidate nomination day, decided to jump the Winc ship in timely fashion without waiting for Dotty to march him down the gangplank. Or perhaps he was just too busy working on dottyandnygllhuw.co.nz, the sequel to michaelandlauren.co.nz which undoubtedly ranks as his greatest tribute so far to the fast-fading glory of Mickey Mayor.

When Julie Christie’s abominable Touchdown tv spindoctors get together with Mickey the result is the latest piece of shite in River City Press that reckons “an upswing in positive feedback about the Wanganui District Council followed its mayor’s fancy footwork on tv.”

There’s a best and worst council voting form at http://mhmc.touchdowntv.com/ and Touchdown’s paid liar says “Wanganui may now be on track to take out the Best Council title ….”

Not intentionally wanting to change the subject of the post, but, worth mentioning.

It was reported on the news that Mickey was stated: "It should be illegal to be in a gang..."

Well, Mickey how about you make the ban on gang patches law and you won't know who is a gang member and who isn't.

That should resolve the issue of you making it illegal to be a gang member.

Wanganui has, and, will always have gang problems.

And you Mickey bad mouthing the gangs isn't making things any better.

It's hard to know where to begin, sometimes, demolishing the lies of this clown.

Mickey acknowledges publicly that Winc is his greatest failure - and after all there are a lot to choose from - saying that Council's failure to define economic development is the root cause of their woes. Now we're to accept that this same Council is to be the saviour of Winc.

But the problem is really that Michael Brian Laws is incompetent, and simply doesn't put in the hard yards. His short attention span and grotesque self-promotion don't exactly help, either.

Funny how anonymickey keeps refuting claims of mayoral cowardice here (for failing to front up to Maori over the gang bylaw etc) by saying the mayor is really a hero because he delivers his abuse and insults publicly.

But he was yet again noticeably absent from the TamaUpoko Link meeting on Jan 29 (along with his division lackeys Marty Lindsay, Sue Pepperell and Julian Rewiti) where the minutes show Mickey getting an in-absentia serve over his new year’s garbage about the River communities being third world. Barney Haami wanted a retraction, leaving Sue Westwood to bring out the official council pooper scooper and “undertook to convey Iwi’s concerns to the mayor”.

And Mickey’s boy Kevvie had to fess up that John Maihi “had spoken with the mayor”.

Good one, Mickey. Leave others to do your dirty work. You’re a real super hero!

Mickey must have been rubbing his hands in glee (he always keeps a tin handy) when he heard the news of the shooting. Perfect timing for him and his gang-patch bollocks. (I was baffled by his assertion on 3News, however, that the child was "a 2-year-old who meant nothing to anyone except her parents". Seemed a bit harsh, I thought.)

In mentionning that, these politicians, including Mickey Mouth, will have an uphill battle infringing on the innocent gang menber's civil liberties.

How do you outlaw and efficently enforce outlawing gangs? Won't happen.

The Gang patches did not kill the child. The bullet did.

And, Gonville is not the CBD.

The child was in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

I am certain that the rival gang members had no idea where that child was.

About the gang patches...It appears that the Mongel Mob and Black Power have already decided their gang colours.
If the patches go away the gang colours will stay. And so will the gangs.

Mickey and the rest of these alarmist grandstanding MP's are "barking up the wrong tree"

It appears that stricter **Gun Control** is in order here.

Gosh, some of you people are dense.

For those thinking that Mickey will eliminate gangs in Wanganui by trying to outlaw gangs and getting rid of gang patches...I'd like to know what kind of drugs are you on.

I'd like to see if the government will up the money for a national gang task force. No...let local government fund their own local gang task force.

Compare and contrast Mr. Manuel's guilty feelings with Mickey's behaviour when he does something wrong, and ask yourself, has this gang member got a more developed sense of responsibility for his actions than the mayor of Wanganui?

Let's not forget Vision's threats of violence here on Lawswatch, threatening phonecalls, and the alleged use of explosive materials to attack personal property.

Perhaps Vision insignia should be banned from the cbd. They behave like a gang, after all. Meeting in secret, acting in concert, no concern for anyone but their own supporters (whom they dub "the real people"). Then there's the aforementioned violence.

Then chinese have a saying. "The longer two enemies fight, the closer they come to resemble one another." We would all do well to remember that. Not that it seems to have taught the Chinese anything.

As regards banning regalia, it's a waste of time. If the actual spines/patches are banned, then they will just wear coloured shirts instead and I can't see how the Government (or Mickey for that matter) can ban someone from wearing red or blue.
What the cops need to do in Wanganui is what they did in Palmy in '02 and that is to come down heavily on gang members and associates, especially out-of-towners, making it uncomfortable for them to even drive down the street. Stop-and-search worked in PN, as did charging members with participation in a criminal group, taking them to court over piffling traffic offences and busting them for possession of miniscule amounts of drugs. They always get bail, of course, so the cops can apply for non-association bail conditions making it impossible for them to meet their fellow members, removing the strength-in-numbers element that fuels so much of their activities. If they defy the bail conditions, they go to jail, simple as that. That approach did not completely finish the gangs in PN, but it did smother them, leading to the effective disbandment of the Black Power (their president was told to retire, the next two leaders wound up inside and one later died there) and the muzzling of the Mob, to the extent that they were evicted from their Housing NZ ghetto and went rather meekly in the end.

Even Chester says “It’s not about stopping gangs – it is about people feeling safe” (Chron 26 04 07). It was good to see that the people featured in the Dominion’s street poll this morning all said they felt safe, so perhaps we shouldn't waste time on legislation that will give gangs lots of publicity and make the members feel important and, at the same time make Wanganui look bad. The patch ban is simply looking for the keys you dropped near your car under a street light half a block away because that's where the light is.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:06am asked:

So what would Laws watch and the "Watchers" do over the current gang problems?

--

Unfortunately, the answer to the question is complex. It isn't populist nor sloganist. It's not easily digestible, nor easily understood, but here goes...

Gangs (as we know them today) have been around in NZ since the first settlers established themselves in the Bay of Islands. At that time, the Bay of Islands was called the 'Hellhole of the Pacific' and many settlers actually left NZ for Australia - despite Australia being full of convicted criminals! So, gang issues are not new, nor isolated to Wanganui.

Gangs are formed by people for a myriad of complex social and economic reasons. Most gangs (including Churches, Societies, Sports groups) are populated by people with similar backgrounds and political views. Birds of a feather flock together. Birds of a feather also need a common enemy, so gangs fight each other in sermons on Sunday morning, on the rugby pitch on Saturday afternoon.

The problem with the 'gangs' under discussion in Wanganui is that some members engage in illegal activities. The majority of these activities involve the manufacture and sale of drugs, and property theft and resale. This is how gang members who are not lawfully employed make a living. Unfortunately, this idea of an 'easy' and 'staunch' living appeals to our disenfranchised youths and the gangs grow in numbers and more illegal activity takes place.

To tackle the illegal activities (not gangs - an important distinction) the police needs to look at ways to cut off illegal financial supplies - replacing illegal means with lawful employment. In particular drugs, and this is where the Central Government needs to step in and regulate the media. It is a fact that demand for P has grown proportionally to the exposure that it has received in the media. We have laws in NZ about publishing suicide details to prevent copycat suicides, yet there is nothing preventing the media from glorifying drug culture, thus fueling demand for the product. Thus more gangs. Thus more problems.

The Council also needs to work with gang leaders who are trying to make a positive difference and provide more community funding for groups who are trying to reach the disenfranchised youths before they join gangs. The gangs need to be integrated into our community, rather than ostracised. If we continue to push the gangs away, they'll continue to operate outside acceptable societal norms - resulting in more pain and anguish for everyone.

The money that Council has spent on Boxing Day concerts and Mayoral Miles could arguably be better spent on community programs for rehabilitation and crime prevention. The spotlight is on Wanganui, lets make it positive. Wanganui has a real opportunity to lead the country in working with our gangs. Let's spend the money earmarked for the anti-gang patch legislation on fixing the problem, rather than driving the ambulance to the bottom of the cliff. And then let's celebrate the people who do make a real difference!

Courage is doing what you know is right, even if it's not popular.

Anonymous said...

No one pretends the gang patch business is going to solve the gang problem. If parliament is stupid enough to let it through, we will have one more unworkable piece of legislation. It is very unlikely to be strenuously enforced. If it is not enforced, but on the books, it will only serve to diminish respect for law generally.

So, insert this sort of crap here, ignore a rule there....it's a slow process, but keep chipping away at the props and processes Micky and you'll have total anarchy.

Anonymous said...

You missed the most worrying part of Chester’s Chron bit, Anon 3:50. Later in the same piece he said “Threats of gang retaliation, provocation and further intimidation only prove the need for a strong community stand.” The whole opinion piece was about the gang patch legislation, so this illustrates that it has apparently already had the effect of inciting threats against the community.

Chester and Micky have taken a bad situation and, with careful nurturing, made it so much worse.

He didn't really need to with his lapdogs nigeldoh & rangi there to swing the votes his way. And the result .. a bloody trainwreck, all carried out behind closed doors.

And as usual Rangi keeps his nose up Mickey's bum as long as he can, then tries to wipe the shit off and pretend he's neutral.

How come anonymickey hasn't given LawsWatch a preview of his spin on the fact that Leo, Lady MacBeth has bailed out of the Wellington job?

Can it be he's made her a better offer to stay in Wangas and do his dirty work for him while he gets on with stuffing up the city?

So how long will it be before she too finds herself a little discomforted by the blood on her hands? No danger, though of her turning mad because Mickey carefully picked her, like he has the other women in his life!

LAWSWATCH, you’re not the only blog for intelligent people who can see the truth about Mickey, ie http://wandaharland.blogspot.com

“They're talking on the radio at the moment about the trouble getting well qualified doctors to stay in Wanganui.

”My feeling is that as long as Michael Laws is mayor, they will continue to lose noble citizens at a fast rate.”

AND

“Poor Wanganui. What were they thinking when they elected that guy.”

AND

“See Laws was the only reason I watched Dancing With The Stars - it was kind of reminiscent of watching The Office, so so bad, but you just couldn't look away. He isn't standing again, although my partner reckons that's cos he's going to pop up as a candidate for Parliament in 2008...”

CYF's probably rightly concerned about things turning nasty within the Vision gang factions as the election approaches and Mickey starts strutting round wearing his Vision patched tee shirt and making threats about anyone like Dotty and Richard's Mob who threaten to take over his turf.

No...WINC should remain in place until all the lost revenue is returned to the city coffers.

To absorb WINC to the council would mean that any and all revenue losses would be overlooked.

Mickey could and would deny WINC existed. Since Mickey was on the board of directors, and, Mickey isn't going anywhere until October, WINC should remain for someone to take accountability. Who better than the mayor.

Once the lost revenues are restored, then, they can do whatever they want to WINC....Pay The Money Back....Mickey.

So, there's to be a mass rally of Wanganui citizens who "love this place".

Speakers will include local MP's, a Wanganui Chronicle rep, and "mayor" Laws.

Mickey has already shared with us his final solution to all New Zealand's problems: eugenics. He has given us a group of people to hate: "the underclass", whose leaders "the gangs" are "ruining New Zealand for everyone". He knows who's to blame: Rob Vinsen, John Anderson and "gang apologists". Now we're giving him a mass rally.

Look for the speech to start by tugging at the heartstrings: "Baby Jhia". Then when he's got you feeling all weepy - and we know how grief can so easily turn to rage - Mickey will remind you who to hate. He'll whip up some feeling against the aforementioned enemies. Then he'll present the solution: himself. Only Mickey can save the country from this terrible scourge. The existing administration is lazy and corrupt, he'll say. The opposition - sorry Chester me old muckka - are just offering more of the same!

Yes this has populist political opportunity written all over it. The stench of the death camps just got stronger.

A copy of Mickey's speech notes for Friday's Reichsparteitag just landed in my in-tray - check it out :)

+ Grief

So what if Leo bails out of the Wgtn job. IF she does. Nothing to do with LW. People change their minds about jobs all the time. What's newsworthy about that. You're here to expose ML for his mistakes, not to invent gossip about his family. So far you're doing a crap job about both LW.

After subjecting Wanganui artists to the worst of his trademark abuse and labelling UNCOl second rate, Mickey jumps all over the media claiming to have "saved" the glass school.

After subjecting Maori to the worst of his trademark abuse and arrogance, and calling for eugenics to prevent people with names he doesn't like breeding, Mickey jumps all over the media claiming to be the big white peacemaker.

Wonder what John Maihi thinks after telling the little twerp off recently for his slagging of the River Road.

The comments about Leo were just that comments...How about you straining what brains are still in that pile of shit and read the Laws Watch Posts....Those are the main topics...Anything outside of the main subject, with the exception of breaking news (i.e. the drive-by shooting)

Are people's personal opinions and F.Y.I.

Furthermore, LW is doing a great job exposing Mickey's Follies and Crimes. I'll post a list for you. And, other commenters have shared with LW other blogs against Mickey. I'll post them too, if you want to view them.

Have a nice day.

Sounds like Mickey is on the Mayoral campaign track.

Propaganda, Adolf Hitler, Josef Gobbels, and George W. Bush all rolled into one.

Has the stench of "Informal Social Control" all over it.

_________________________________

Informal social control denominates customs, traditions, norms and other social values inherited by the individual. It is exercised by a society without explicitly stating these rules and is expressed through customs, norms, and mores using informal sanctions such as criticism, disapproval, guilt and shaming. In extreme cases this may even include social discrimination and exclusion. This implied social control usually has more control over individual minds because they become ingrained in their personality. Traditional society uses mostly informal social control embedded in its customary culture relying on the socialization of its members to establish social order. More rigidly-structured societies may place increased reliance on formal mechanisms.

Yeah, it's a political rally alright. If it had any inkling of being a pulling a city together rally, it would have a priest to gather all in prayer for Jhui's soul and and a heart felt farewell. To pray for peace and restraint until those responsible are brought to justice...NOT have politicians chanting "Seig Heil"
to Mickey's political rants.
Not to incite hate...Hell, that would put people at a level no better than the gangs.

Also, Mickey is recruiting vigilantes for his witch hunt and lynch mob.

Two individuals have already **VOLUNTARILY** surrendered to the police without Mickey's grandstanding or police arrest.

Mickey, put up the money for a Wanganui Police Gang Task Force and stop inciting a possible riot.

You're a complete fool who is poisoning Wanganui with your nonsense, Mickey.

October can't come soon enough.

So ... if she was such a star of the newspaper firmament, then would you care to share with us the detail of her departure.

And was her attendance record and level of commitment at the Chronic any better than her crap record as a Horizons staffer and then regional councillor ... or have her standards slipped since under Mickey's orders?

Dunne applauds

mayoral/iwi taskforce
United Future leader Peter Dunne has applauded Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws and Whanganui iwi for coming together to work through the divisions that have resulted in the increase of gang activity in the Wanganui region.

“I am very hopeful that this taskforce will identify policies and processes that the Wanganui District Council, police and local iwi can use to develop as solutions to this issue,” said Mr Dunne.

I attended the rally at Majestic square today. The speakers were the mayor, Rev Bell (who offered a prayer to Jhia), MPs Jill Pettis and Chester Borrows, tribal kaumatua John Maihi, Inspector Duncan McLeod and the Chronicle editor Kirsty McNicol.

That does not sound like a lynch mob to me: what ridiculous criticism by posters on this blog.

It was a very moving experience. The mayor carried little jhia's cousin onto the stage and delivered a speech that was spot on. You people need to get over yourselves.

Laws Watch:

A proper Police Gang Task Force. Be it National and/or local government.

Implementing a police Gang Task Force. That Task Force can concentrate on gang activity and mode of operation to free up the regular police force. The Task Force can aid and/or participate in gang stings/raids. The Gang Task Force can also have more professional undercover agents embedded into gangs to identify who they are and how they operate. The Gang Task Force can establish guidelines to aid MPs by gathering accurate information to enact proper legislation against gangs and educate the public. The Gang Task Force can research information from other police forces in the world and, with Interpol, that have their own Gang Task Force (i.e. the United States) to enhance the New Zealand Gang Task Force to "custom make" its Task Force Operations that is compatible to New Zealand. The Gang Operation and Organised Crime in the United States is far more advanced and complicated than here in New Zealand. Therefore, With the knowledge learned from the United States Gang Task Forces, the New Zealand Gang Task Force will be more prepared to deal with the future level of gang operations to come, here in New Zealand.tional and/or local.

Compliments from your friendly neighbourhood Laws Watch supporter.
