Fool me twice, shame on me

Michael Laws, Mayor, WanganuiJust whose hand is up whose bum?

It's alright Watchers, you haven't stumbled upon the online edition of some odd fetish magazine, we're talking in terms of muppets.

We've already told the
tale of Neil Kirton, former Associate Health Minister in the NZ First / National coalition government, whose career was eventually derailed by Machiavellian Mickey's meanderings.

Now it seems he, like his mentor, has slunk off into the far reaches of local government. Perhaps Mickey and Neil are the type of people who are convinced that someone, somewhere, desperately needs pint sized despots to tell them what to do.

Anyway, Kirton has all but disappeared from view, being either unable or unwilling to sink to Mickey's depths and cling to the sort of sad "celebrity" which comes from having people chuckle over their newspapers at your misogynist xenophobic clubland rantings.

Supposedly, when Kirton crashed and burned from the heights of Cabinet to the depths of Hawkes Bay, the association between he and his former mentor cooled somewhat. But can it be coincidence that he and Mickey are having the same fevered dreams?

While Napier City Council has unanimously decided to drop plans to cut councillor numbers from 12 to 10 following their hearing of submissions which were universally opposed to the move and coming to the realisation that cutting numbers would not reduce costs, the Hawkes Bay Regional Council is squabbling amongst themselves. Well, squabbling with one fractious member who wants to chop numbers - none other than Neil Kirton.

Council
chairwoman Eileen von Dadelszen is trying to point out that whether there is nine or six councillors will not make any difference because "cutting their number will only mean fewer councillors are paid more".

"The only savings which can be guaranteed by having fewer councillors are for such things as travel reimbursement, agenda production and mail outs, meeting costs and training, and conference expenses", she says, which amount to an estimated $20,000 a year. So Hawkes Bay doesn't even save the cost of a dunny.

But Kirton, who wants to cut Hawkes Bay's democracy by a third, swears that reduction will save ratepayers $120,000.

Mrs von Dadelszen said Mr Kirton's comments on salary payments to councillors "had clouded the debate over the representation review" which we think is a polite way of saying he's fibbing worse than... well, worse than Mickey.

"The opportunities exist to reform local government in Hawke's Bay and cutting politicians is just the start," he says, no doubt clicking his heels together as he surveys a map of Poland... sorry, Napier and Hastings. If he continues following Mickey's plan, next to go will be superfluous employees such as those who actually carry out manual labour, to be replaced by the really useful lieutenants like spin fairies and lawyers.

Where could he have got these ideas from, let alone the means of selling them to a population which simply hates politicians and thinks any scheme to cut them back must, by definition, be a good thing? We just hope he remembers what happened last time he adopted a strategy authored by Mickey. After all, he hasn't got much further to fall.

Is this the same Neil kirton who topped the regional council polls in HB for the past two elections?
And is regional manager of Victim support for the central NI?

If so could he please counsel these sad souls in here who keep losing and losing and losing. Losers.

An excellent letter in the Cron this morning (Sat) from Lona Sutherland.
A must read for all.
Thanks Lorna for the reserched truth.

To answer a question in the previous article comments... the stained glass is being done by Greg Hall who works for Central Glass. More importantly, has Council managed to find a sponsor for each piece? Otherwise this is going to be another rate payer expenditure for Mickey's throne room.

Anonymous said...

The mayor has had some pretty good success at finding sponsors - the Mangamahu bridge from the govt, upping the River road subsidy and the Splash fundraising is going to get that $300K easy.
There was a rumour circulating around council on Friday that he has got a six figure sum out of a corporate for the Splash Centre. If he likes a project, it happens. if he doesn't, it doesn't.

Lorna Sutherland had no facts in her letter. She asserted a conversation like Bill Milbank asserted he's had a million pledged to the Sarjeant.
You can't trust arties, ever. They're proven liars in Wangas.

You really need to get out more.

As for the mayor's ability to make things happen, we'll see. All experience shows that everything the mayor touches turns to shit, and the Swimming Pool extension hasn't even started yet.

The mayor taking on the Medical Council this morning - a very powerful lobby group. Who's side are we on given that ML may just be right?

So you agree, then, he's obsessed with imposing his "vision" (myopia more like) on everyone else. Was his potty training somehow inadequate or something, because the symptoms you describe indicate a serious personality disorder. Poor little mayor.

Sadly there are not any 'winners', only losers. Wanganui becomes know as the city that voted in the arrogant little man that disgraced himself. And Laws ends his public career as mayor of a small town in NZ. And I'm sure that's not really want he in -'visioned' at the end of working life. Watch out for Chas mark two!

Laws Watch said...

Goodness, "anon" @ 11.00am Sept 2.

You have a remarkable knowledge of Mr Kirton's bckground to know these fascinating (but entirely irrelevant to the point) tidbits.

Friend of his are we? Now, who in Wanganui is a friend of Mr Kirton. Ummmm... gosh, the list is just so long.

Not that the Mayor ever vents his bile here. Of course not.

Sad, really, when one's self esteem is so low one measures it against electoral votes.

And we never said you weren't a good liar Mickey. It's what wins you and your friends all those elections.

Lawswatch, you dickhead. I read Kirton's Wikipedia entry.

The full story is on "Stuff", and once again it shows that Mickey is lying (probably trying to enhance his own dogshit "celebrity"):

"Dr Campbell said allowing easier entry for doctors who had been working in a comparable health system had helped graduates from a lot of European countries.

"We've actually freed up access for a lot of people coming form overseas, but unfortunately South Africa didn't meet the criteria.

"There are things like life expectancy, infant mortality, and the nature of the illnesses that practitioners are seeing," he said.

Other public health indicators are the mortality rate for children under five years and survival rates to 65.

Dr Campbell emphasised the council was not stopping entry for South African doctors, but simply requiring them to follow a longer pathway to practising here."

So they've made it easier for overseas Doctors to get work here, but that means nothing to Mr. Lies. Perhaps he thinks that South African Doctors' politics might suit his populism better. More likely he's just desperate for attention.

Anonymous said...

If the mayor SO sure he will get back in , why then is he doing a 'poll'?

Anonymous said...

The Diva might be right on this point with the Medical Council. And he desperately needs to make the hospital work if the grand plan to get 20 thousand new immigrants into the town is going to work.
Sadly the way he does it ( media) never makes Wanganui sound a great 'friendly'' place to visit. Plus the rest of the country think he's a dick.

Friends in Dawke's Bay reckon Kirton's definitely not the brightest bulb on the Xmas tree -- probably rates alongside the Higgies, Lindsays et al who fall for Mickey's bullshit.

Ya gotta love the way Mickey just can't keep his mouth shut and comes here whispering about "rumours around the council" when no one here gives a bugger.

But what's really an indication of the sicko mayoralty we have is that the only criteria for whether any projects succeeds whether the organisers climb far enough up the mayoral backside and whether there's enough media spin in it for Mickey.

ie IT HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH WHAT'S GOOD FOR WANGANUI.

TVNZ chief executive "starts disciplinary process" against resident foul-mouth Bill Ralston and forces him to write a letter of apology to a reporter he called, aoming other things, a c---.

So what does Dr Warbum do when Mickey uses the same term of endearment for a WDC staff member? Nothing much, apparently. Or does he write her a nice fat cheque as part of his shit shovelling duties?

Anonymous said...

I imagine he has had to. Shouldn't be hard to find out if any payout has been made, by using the Official Information Act. In fact, it would interesting to use the OIA to find out how much the restructuring of council cost as well.

Anonymous said...

Trouble is MLs is doing mostly what he was elected to do.So he will probably hose in again.
His 'unfortunate side' is the issue.
We need a Mayor with better people skills, rather than a meglomaniac.
I'm sick of fielding the 'why did you elect that awful ML ?' question from out of towners

OIA for attendance figures? Are you taking the piss? All you have to do is check the minutes in the following meeting's agenda to see who was there, right down to how many members of the public. If it's not there then the meeting secretary is not doing his/her job. OIA request? Your'e having a laugh. But anyway, do fill us in: who was the worst attending?

Opps Bearhunter you'r a little incorrect. The Committee secretary records the names of the Councilors attending a meeting but not the numbers of the public.:-)

I see the Pep has demonstrated how up-to-the minute with Wanganui matters she is. Publishing her Councillor comment really proves that all those people who say she's out of town and out of touch are all just wrong, oh yes siree.
With up-to-the minute insights into everything from generic youth issues to generic youth issues, she's really sent those critics packing.

You know, I think it's wonderful she can be so focussed, what with Mickey's manufactured health crisis, moves to further cripple democracy in Wanganui, and an entire Wellington based business and home to run.

Anonymous said...

The only other Councillor with a poor attendance record was as I understand told by the Mayor to take as much time as they needed while going through a difficult time personally.
They did just that and was criticised publicly for poor attendance, again by the mayor.

Anonymous said...

Its really great to see Greg Hall getting the work to do all the panels, I note the price has gone from $2000 to $3000 per panel, but cant help feeling a little uncomfortable about one artist getting all the work.
Were expressions of interest from local artists called for in this project?
Or maybe someone could correct me, perhaps Greg is the only artist locally who has the appropriate skills?

Anonymous said...

Not the NAMES of the members of the public, but how many were there. And it still records the names of the councillors, so quite why anyone would waste a perfectly good OIA request is beyond me. But then I haven't had Mickey's flash education.

Anonymous said...

Interesting how some here are keen to allow the mayor to take the credit for anything slightly positive which happens in Wanganui,no govt would have left a community such as Mangamahu stranded, bailey bridges were put in place after the 2004 floods with no public chest beating from public figures, and remember the temporary Mangamahu bridge comes with costs attached, a monthly lease, and maintenance costs.
The River Road subsidy was not achieved by the efforts of this Mayor, approval for funding was a result of years of lobbying by the local community, tourism groups, iwi and the previous Council, and the present staff.

Didn't Mickey's latest lie-fest in the chron letter today blame "management" for wanting to move meetings to two-monthly?

Funny how his deputy manages to expose the lie on the same day but in another paper... really, guys, how come you can't get your stories straight? Or is it time for come back Spin Fairy, all is forgiven.

When the Mayor chose to change the meeting schedules from a six-weekly cycle to a two-monthly cycle, I, for one, was quite happy. We may have slightly longer meetings with a two-monthly round, but rather that than more meetings. I am all for a simpler life.

Well, it's not so much the Tongan monarch who the flag is honouring, it's more a gesture of solidarity with the Tongan people who, despite the king's love of a good rort, seemed to like him and have been in mourning. The Tongan people who make up a sizeable proportion of our population. And ML does not have perspective, he just wants to be a shock-jock and try to boost his incredibly low ratings.
