We have issues

Despite the best attempts of the Mayor to divert attention from the now-imminent buy-election with incendiary personal attacks, it's now 25 days away. And of course many people will complete and send back their ballots before the closing date.

With a relatively small number of votes in the poll (still open, located in the post immediately below) Margaret Campion is out in front, with Mark Simmonds and Allan Anderson pretty much level-pegging for second place. But visitors don't think Wanganui will vote the same way as they do (which is probably a fair bet), with most picking Phillipa Baker-Hogan as the eventual victor.

That's the who. But what about the why? What are the issues that voters want to see candidates address? Bearing in mind that no candidate can change the behaviour of the Mayor (many have tried, none have succeeded...) nor are likely to be able to undo past decisions, what ought they to be addressing in the various bits of propaganda you'll be receiving between now and polling day?

Watchers detect a feeling of ennui about the place, perhaps occasioned by the weather, perhaps the time of year, perhaps tired by the relentless drone of spin, perhaps the realisation that, when it comes to the Diva, every day is Groundhog Day. Or perhaps all of the above. But don't let it prevent you from completing the ballot paper, hopefully having first obtained sufficient information from the candidates to make an informed decision. You owe it to everyone else. And to yourself.

I resent the fact that lawswatch seems to think I am too dumb to consider two things at once and that ONLY they can see through the spin.

Given the distinct lack of comments in here now, I think people know exactly where the spin is coming from. For future REAL stories I think I will stick to the Chron.

Goodbye.

I notice the article about Rex W has vanished from the council web site - I wonder if he has been advised to do so.
He responds here.

The fact that the Diva is behaving like he is is a pretty good indication that you are hitting the mark. Don't let this blog die, it's just what he wants. And whoecer you are (does it really matter??) keep up the great work!!
Thank you for all of the effort and time you put in to try and level the playing field. You are all champions!!!

Sorry if we've given that impression, that was truly never the intent.

The comments here (which always add something perceptive to the original post and sometimes contribute new and important information) prove beyond a doubt that plenty of people can see through the spin.

Now that we know that Rex Widerstrom is the Webmaster and that Carol Webb was his NZ agent shouldn't you just be more open? The anonymity is what is affecting the credibility.

Ok I've read my Chronicle this morning and can understand why the mayor gets ratty with this blog sometimes. It's also clear that it is based in Perth, Australia which seems strange and that it is anonymous, according to the insert in the paper, because that protects Laws Watch from, ironcally, defamation laws.
Now that the athorship is out and LW is no longer a "shadowy group" why not just drop the cloak and get on with having reasoned debate?

I couldn't agree more.

Mickey says Lawswatch is motivated by hate.
What is it then that motivates Micky?

I have just read this item written by Mickey.
It's a bit like the Pot calling the Kettle black. Just remember Mickey your past aint too flash either, or have you forgotten that.

Love this site please don't go away.

anonymous @ 4.58am (goodness, what has you up at that hour?!): If you read the Chron carefully you'll see that Rex Widerstrom admitted to no more than the genesis of the idea for a "...Watch" blog based on experience overseas. Matt Dutton, who quite openly provided some pieces of material, and Carol Webb stated on Sunday they weren't going to be associated in any way.

And anonymous @ 7.28am - your understanding of the Mayor's "rattiness" is touching. But this blog is anonymous not because of defamation laws but because the Mayor reacts to criticism by personally attacking those he sees as responsible. This not only causes distress to those people - who, as we've seen in the past few days, are attacked not for the accuracy of their views but on their character - but more importantly obscures entirely the issues over which they are criticising him. Which is, of course, the plan.
