Popularity hilarity

There's been a fair bit of debate on the topic of just how far Mayor Mickey has managed to erode the popularity that saw him and the diVisionites elected with a healthy margin at the last election.

Now, we realise that any poll here will be held to be unscientific (particularly by those whose views don't seem to accord with the majority of responses) but we figure it may be interesting nonetheless to run one a poll on the topic.

As always, please read the question carefully. It doesn't ask "how much more do you personally like or hate Mickey?". It doesn't ask "how much more liked / hated do you wish he was?". We're asking whether, as you've talked with friends, neighbours, people waiting in line for coffee, folks at the footy, you get the impression Wanganui's welcome mat is well and truly worn out, or whether, given the abject failure of Radio Dive (now sitting at just two percent) to prop up his media "career", he'd get over the line for a second term?

Has Michael Laws' popularity increased or decreased since he was elected?

Just heard that Michael’s most recent media appointee has jumped ship after just five months, which must just about be a record in an organisation that seems to be setting new records for staff churn every week.

Is it possible she found herself on the receiving end of mayoral abuse like her predecessor, or was it just that Cr Lindsay poached her from Mickey’s grasp for his radio station? A case of the mayor being dicked by one of his own councillors, which can’t have done much to revive the flagging relationship between Moaning Marty and Mad Michael.

Five months is a long time in Wanganui politics:
"We're looking forward to Kate joining the communications team – her skills and enthusiasm will be an asset to the Council," Communications Co-ordinator Sue Dudman said. Miss Gilpin will start work on May 22."

Does anyone know if Mickey did better than 1.6% in the last survey.

Catching up with comments under the previous post where anonymickey said:
“ML is a rugby lover for chrissakes. His book on Norm Hewitt proves that & he hosts a weekly show on SKY Rugby. The criticism of his involvement is pathetic. Doesnt he also write a regular column in NZ Rugby News or similar? “

Does this mean that if Wanganui managed to elect as it’s next mayor, for example, a cat breeding enthusiast ... perhaps one who appears on tv giving his opinion on what makes a good cat, we should just accept that huge amounts of ratepayers money should be thrown at the next locally bred cat that showed the potential to win at the district cat show?

.... It’s rather ironic that the Mickey-Helen relationship turned pear shaped after she hooked up with a council staff member; now Miss Gilpin’s galloped off after hooking up with a division councillor’s radio station. What is it about Michael and women?

Old news about Kate Gilpin. That was known 2 weeks ago and the word is that Cr Lindsay got the go-ahead from the mayor to recruit the gal.

Is this the same polling network that said Jill Pettis would win whanganui and Margaret Campion win the by-election. Ship of Fools.

yeah the Council staff HAVE been briefed about Heart of wanganui and not one of them has leaked anything. Not doing your job, LW - you don't have very good contacts at council do you??

Is this the same anon that can't stop lying? A quick reference to the original post would reveal that, whilst readers supported Margaret Campion they overwhelmingly predicted a Phillipa Baker-Hogan win.

And readers weren't asked to predict the outcome of the general election, just to indicate who they intended voting for. Yes, the majority supported Jill Pettis (53% to 31% for Chester Borrows) but there is no way of telling if they believed Pettis would win, since they were never asked.

Been taking polling lessons from Antoinette Beck, have we? Now there's a mascara-wearing ingenue who knows how to run an honest poll.

Really? I (and the quick poll of colleagues I just asked) must have been off on leave that day!

The HoW is a by word for the new library, however if the Museum board stick to their guns, no ones going any where.

And you are??? Anyway there is not much too leak, it's all well designed and very exciting.

The thing I like about the mayor is that he fronts his decisions personally, explains his reasons and is straight up.

This contrasts with Lawswatch who gets nasty and personal and doesn't have the guts to attach their name to anything.

He has done more for this city in 2 years than Chas did in 20. That would contrast with LW who does nothing except moan. Pom, are we?

Just as a side line, does anyone know how much the ruby is costing the ratepayer? And before you 'have a go' I'm not against the ruby just would like to know the facts.

Yes, we must hang our heads in shame because, compared to saintly Mickey, who takes the high ground in every debate and never gets nasty and personal...

Nope... we tried to see the world through your eyes, wherein Mickey never personally attacked people he thought were responsible for this blog, never attacked Council staff, never attacked Code of Conduct submitters, never attacked Tongans... but it just isn't working. Can we have some of whatever you're on?

Perhaps this blog, if it gets "nasty and personal" is merely reflecting its subject.

He has done more for this city in 2 years than Chas did in 20.

He's done more to this city, certainly. We've never said the previous administration wasn't moribund nd practically useless. But does that excuse the present one being a cargo cult?

Pom, are we?

Racist, are we?

So she turned out to be another Useless C--t did she Mickey? It's an interesting commentary on the way this council's management is run by the mayor in contravention of the Local Government Act that he feels able to buy in his mates and sychophants and then trade them to his diVision councillors when he thinks they aren't following his game plan. Just like American football really. And where is Dr Wartneutron in all this, one might ask?

Anonymous said...

Those close to Dave Laurence will be appalled that ML has even tried to capitalise on his death by inferring some sort of endorsement. Dave was a decent man and the tragic demise of decency and democracy at Guyton St has haunted him beyond words.

This is an unwarranted slur on Dr Warburton's devotion and allegiance to the LGA. Whenever he pops in to Council between his private business engagements up north he impresses all as a faithful servant of the LGA.

The only problem is that he has such limited experience of Local Government, he thinks LGA is a CEO licensing system for Lazy Gutless Arseholes and he's desperately trying to live up to that in order to be a recipient of the first ever Mayoral Bum Lickeing awards. Poor bugger.

Dave loathed Mickey, can't believe the man has the gall the put out a press release about his passing. New lows from the council offices.

So you even use the dead against the Mayor do you? You have no respect for Mr Laurence or his family. This is a disgusting posting.
I have read the mayor's press release. in no way does he claim endorsement from Mr Laurence. What a poisonous group you are.

Anonymous said...

Kate Gilpin has found a better job, in radio that she loves. How can you make something of that. People do move on you know.

Excellent press release from ML about Dave Laurence. What is there to complain about that, LW? You're supposed to be dishing the dirt on ML but you just pick at every single thing he does, including his comments about the passing of a moce guy. That's sick LW, why don't you admit it, ML isn't doing anything wrong. You're redundant. No, I'm NOT ML.

Muzza writes:

"the questions are carefully researched together with the pros and cons by a working party comprising senior Council officers and Councillors Westwood, Dahya, McGregor, McKinnon, Mayor Laws and myself."
___________________________________

What a load of crap, Muzza. If your committee considered issues then had an actual reputable research company coin the questions that might be a little better, but the fact is the hard decisions you were elected to make cannot be reduced to yes or no answers.

Stop making excuses and do your job, or is the prospect of another year of saying "I agree with corrupt worthless Mickey" too attractive for you?

":Excellent press release from ML about Dave Laurence. What is there to complain about that, LW? You're supposed to be dishing the dirt on ML "

No you misunderstand, ML is 'portraying' himself as Mr Nice guy at someone else's expense. It is ML that is being disrespectful of Dave's family by putting out that press release. At least no one in the Chron will be fooled, knowing Dave's true feelings towards the mayor.

Still no word on Mickey's radio ratings. I take it didn't go so well for him.
Since Radio Live only got 2% overall, it's a good guess that he didn't even make his 1.6% this time.
After all that publicity and all that money spent on him, he couldn't deliver.
Where to from here for the little guy, sadly watchers, I think we may be stuck with him.

Dave Laurence was the civic reporter for the Chronicle for a number of years and that number is so long no-one can probably remember.
The mayor did the proper thing in noting his contribution to civic affairs in a respectful manner.
Then some moronic individual claims that the mayor is disrespecting the dead reporter! Whoever posted that comment is sick and it is no wonder that they chose to be anonymous.
The mayor did his job so gets criticised. He doesn't say anything, and he'd be critiocised. You losers are congenitally unhappy.

What about Michael Laws getting $700,000 out of Genesis for Splash - now that's skill.

The margin of error in the radio ratings survey was 2%.

Still not made it above the dead zone Lawsy? Sob.

Stay tuned ... the bad news from the radio ratings survey is due to be released at 9am on Friday week, October 27.

As someone who has had several family bereavements in the last two years it has been interesting to see the reactions to the condolence cards bearing the mayoral name.

Initially the younger family members saw right through sicko Mickey's attempts to use people's grief for vote-buying while the older rellies who voted for him thought it was "nice".

Now even the oldies are aghast that the creep they now know to be racist ageist and sexist is hypocritical enough to try to turn their grief to his advantage. If they needed any further convincing his slagging off of the newly-dead King of Tonga sealed his fate.

He has no friends among the living so he'd better keep those death notices and get Antoinette Beck to help him come up with a foolproof voting system for them.

Radio ratings out on October 27th
YEHAAAA, I can't wait. Do you think Mickey will do a press release for that one.
Just how can you spin the fact that nobody listens to you?

Anonymous said...

If the margin of error is 2% then does that mean Mickey is the first person in history to have -.4% people listening to him. It's probably the rest of the Vision team, I guess a lobotomy counts as a negative

Anonymous said...

Given that no-one who posts here LIKES the mayor, the poll is bound to be biased but not as one-eyed as this nonsense over the Chronicle reporters death. For those of us who knew Dave - Dave didn't really like anyone apart from his family. He was a difficult old bugger and its a pity we never saw the clash that might have eventuated if he had been well enough to take on the civic round post-2004.
The mayor did do the right thing, by the way. Acknowledge and move on.

Anonymous said...

He certainly gets a shitload of money for working on Radio Live and the CanWest AGM reported them as being in profit in their first year.
The radio ratings are nationwide. You seem to be using the Auckland result but a lot of the Radioworks stations have their greatest popularity in the provinces and South Island. You would need to compare apples with apples and the morning talk slot is always set up by the breakfast figures. Its why Leighton Smith rates well in Auckland because Holmes delivers him 21% ratings. That said Smith doesn't rate outside Auckland.

The scuttlebutt around council is that the mayor earns more for doing 3 hours a day on radio than the CEO's salary. Kate G had her uses!

Bearhunter said...

Funnily enough I think Laws did do the right thing re Dave Laurence. He acknowledged his contribution in a short release, which did not contain the sort of cod-camaraderie that often surfaces in situations like this. So, well done, Mickey, perhaps there is a human being in there struggling to get out. I doubt it, but you never know...

The mayor has a good boy lately, keeping his mouth under-control, the Vision Party must have put some pressure on him after the "Fat brown slug" affair. Good on ML, sick to the business you were born for, being a public servant.

Anonymous said...

Have you read the mayor's e-column on the council website? It does not look like he will be worrying about future employment does it? Hasn't he always regarded the mayoralty as his charity work?

As Mickey embarks on one of the biggest butt covering exercises of his made reign to date before releasing the true costs of the splash centre it's worth taking a look at the resolutions from the
Strategy Committee 12 September 2005, especially c, d and e.

So is it all in the bag, Mickey?

THAT the Council confirms that the $2.5M of Council funding is conditional on:
a. The Council assuming ongoing responsibility for the management of the project
b. The design meeting the Council’s criteria for pool design, operation and operational
costs
c. All the necessary funding being in place before tenders are called
d. The Council realising its funding through the sale of surplus or under-performing
assets before tenders are called
e. The tendered price not exceeding the funding available.

Sheet, man - everyone knows council approved and underwrote the Splash extension months ago and wholly changed its stance at the mayor's insistence. It was even reported in the Chronicle!

The council is missing off the Chrons list of what everyone is doing for the rugby. Council staff are right in behind. Funny the chron didn't print about the jerseys, balloons, posters, flags, videos playing. GO Wanganui.

Yeah Kate G was a firecracker and had a good relationship with everyone including the mayor. But she's a radio gal and Marty Lindsay knew it and pounced. The council word is that another radio person is replacing her but no idea who.
