Voltaire's bastards

There's always been one debate on which this blog has come down firmly against the majority of anti-Mickey commenters.

Whenever a comment supporting the Mayor appears on the blog, those opposed to him tend to leap to the conclusion that it's Mickey himself in various anonymous guises. And the more odious the response - descending at times into overt racism, sexism and personal abuse - the more they see this as indicating that Mickey himself has been at the keyboard again.

They believe - being in the main kindly people who'll gladly entertain a civilised debate with someone who happens to hold an opposing view on any issue - that the majority of their neighbours are the same. Ergo, it must only be that confirmed bully and potty mouth M.B. Laws Esq who'd visit here and defecate thoughts which read like this:

...you losers contribute nothing except your mostly, foreign, negativism. Piss off home you whinging poms, fat Tongan king lovers and ugly Yanks.
...to cite but the most recent example.

However, we've always disagreed. We're sure the Mayor does visit here - seriously, can you imagine Mickey being able to resist reading anything that's written about him, however uncomplimentary, and then, having read it, being able to resist responding? But we've never ascribed all, or even the bulk, of the abusive comments to him.

Nor do we think, even for a moment, he's called up the organisers of a planned peaceful protest - not even a protest, really, more a sort of harmless hippie hand-holding - and spewed venom and made threats of violence. But equally clearly, the people who did this are people who support him.

Michael Laws knows the effect his behaviour has on a section of society. Just as he knew when crafting NZ First policy that, while it in no way advocated violence or threats against sectors of society, it would nonetheless have that effect by allowing those who would commit such acts to cloak themselves in legitimacy. But he didnt care - the policy (almost) got him what he wanted, and if some people were sacrificed along the way, well... none of them were Michael Laws, so who cares?

It's a sad truism that any town has a proportion of its population which harbours ugly, racist, sexist and even violent sentiments. But usually those people keep their inner demons controlled, expressing their milder prejudices over a few beers with their mates perhaps, but generally keeping their worst excesses in check.

That's because in most towns there's a prevailing climate of tolerance and politeness, and it's obvious that boistrously giving voice to irrational prejudices and threats of violence wouldn't be tolerated.

But what happens in Wanganui, where the town's First Citizen is wont to descend to personal abuse - everything from"single issue nutters" to "fat brown slug" to "useless ____" at the merest whiff of an opposing opinion? It doesn't take a highly-subsidised team of sociologists to figure out that, for the small proportion of other citizens who harbour extreme ill-will toward others, this lowers the bar.

If the Mayor has no standards of personal behaviour in terms of what he says, a small number of people will see that as a reason not to have to exercise restraint in what they do. After all, they're not in an exalted position like the Mayor, so their standards can be even lower, right?

The inevitable end result is that some citizens start making gutless, anonymous threats of violence against other citizens, particularly those who wish to peacefully protest the words and actions of the person they see as their de facto leader.

We're not breaking any new ground in pointing out that denigrating and dehumanising some people removes an important barrier which prevents other people feeling able to openly abuse and threaten them.

The end results of that are always ugly. It's happening here in Wanganui. And it's happening because of Michael Laws.

(The title of this post, for those that were wondering, is both a reference to Voltaire's famous statement that he disagreed with what the speaker was saying, but would defend to the death his right to say it, and to John Ralston Saul's excellent book of that name in which, amongst other things, he critiques "the news media's focus on false events and manufactured celebrities". Are you listening, Mrs Pickett? Incidentally, Voltaire also said "Prejudices are what fools use for reason".)

Get real, Lawswatch.

I agree, Lawswatch at least ten messages a day are from Antoinette Beck and have nothing whatsoever to do with Mickey. And we all know how much Antoinette loves rugby.

This is a load of crap. LW you are supposed to be exposing ML. You obviously have nothing on him. Why don't you admit. He's not that bad.

Mickey’s & Bob's little soldiers must be quaking in their jackboots after being outed in today’s paper for their illicit threats as they wait for the Laughing Policemen/women to knock on their doors. Come back Sam, Mickey needs you.

Speaking of Antoinette Beck, is the name Sue Dudman another pseudonym for A Beck? After all, she's shown her devotion by managing to use Mickey's picture four times and his name more than ten in the latest piece of ratepayer-funded mayoral propaganda to pollute our letter boxes?

Having seen what happened to her spin fairy predecessor, baby spin fairy who’s just flitted off, and the rest of her former colleagues, one assumes she'll do just about anything to put off the inevitable … but isn't this sort of thing going a bit far?

Tsk tsk Mickey. So testy when one might expect at least a smidgeon of grace and gratitude for this amazing piece of head in the sand nonsense from Laws Watch.

Good on you Watchers for referencing John Raulston Saul. Bloody heavy going that book.

Worthless Mickey loves conflict. You've hit the nail on the head again.

Yes, Jeremy, it's always choice spending other people's money. You'll make a perfect backbench MP.

And to think that Master Loader's chief patron was so quick to brand the Local Government Conference a waste of time and money for "real" councillors like Westwood. But then there's real mileage to be had from the grooming the likes of Jeremy et al to be the poster boys for Mickey's brave new world. Go Jeremy! You're doing your bit for Mickey's machine and sucking on the ratepayers' tit at the same time. No higher calling has a young "democrat".

As a member of the Chamber of Commerce it is good to see that not only has Nigel Morris renounced the mayor and Vision , but Warren Ruscoe, who formerly seemed to have been captured by the mayoral madness. is coming out and condemning at least one aspect of this madman’s wrecking of our city. It may have taken two years but when previously sycophantic fools like these two begin to see the light, it’s a good indication that Wanganui has had enough. Let’s hope Mr Laws has booked a one-way ticket out of town and out of the country for 12 months hence. And let us hope he takes his equally discredited, unwelcome and toxic companion with him.

*****

Not on your life, LW. There is no doubt Bob Walker exists in many guises though he may well have been made to disappear since the division agm. Just positing that the routine posts using Mickey's stock phrases and displaying a simply astonishing ability to dump the contents of the mayoral brain - along with arcane facts about the council and those who sail in her (ie Kevin Ross’ age etc etc) and that it would be evidence for the slackest court in the land to find MickeyMayor guilty of repeated, repetitive comments to this blog.

And who really would believe that instead of being out flogging off houses, Bob Walker sits by his computer round the clock waiting for Mickey’s irregular e-coli to appear so he can rush onto Lawswatch and tell everyone how great they are within seconds of them appearing on the mayoral (council same thing) website.

So wake up and smell the Mickey, Lawswatch, why don't you!

Mmmm let’s see, two over-fed rats who have rather a lot in common with the King of Tonga start jumping ship after Mickey’s fat brown slug comment … can they be related, do you think?

So the new editor is swapping Tim Shadbolt for MickeyMayor. No doubt Tim has fully briefed her on the scourge of local government. At any rate she will have read his column in her own paper in July about the “deeply offensive” little creep who stated it was his intention to do “a Tim Shadbolt on Wanganui”.

“Mayor Laws’ destructive comments and flawed views may generate a lot of publicity, but I believe you can generate just as much publicity with goodwill, inspiration and humour. Getting involved in ‘Rocky Horror’ shows; mid winter swims; Fight for Kids boxing; ‘Dancing With The Stars’; Sting; zero fee education or films like ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ is a far better way to generate publicity. I’m sorry Michael, but as far as I’m concerned you’re not doing ‘a Tim Shadbolt’ at all.” Mayor’s Column, Southland Times, 1 July 2006

wot a lot of crap from anon at 9.49pm -
Morris remains a card-carrying member of the VISION team, and ruscoe praises Laws in the latest edition of the Chamber of Commerce newsletter.

if we're going to have a blog let's stick to the facts and ditch the wish-fulfilment fantasies.

Concentrate on andy Jarden's anger at having the mayor out his new editor 48 hours before the official announcement. The air was blue in the executive suite of the Chronicle on Thursday.

anon @ 7.44am: Actually, we do think Bog lives from e-coli to e-coli. After a full week without one, he's running out of things to think. But we're not denying the sulphurous aroma of Mickey permeates many of the comments on LW, either.

The point of the post is to urge readers not to underestimate the number of respectable-looking shirt collars around Wangas beneath which, hidden from public view, glow necks in various shades of red.

Perhaps it's time for a LW poll... a percentage scale for readers to estimate the number of closet bigots secretly delighting in Mickey's Gospel of Intolerance.

Why is the Chronicle announcing their new editor now when she does not start until the end of November? and why the delay?

The Vision team are tight and that mystifies me because the only person who seems to have left was Joan Street and she left before the 2004 election.

LAWSWATCH - A shadowy group which gathers with but ONE purpose - to analyse, and occasionally mock, the reign of The Diva of the Ditch, His Worship the Mayor, Michael Laws. Fuelled by scurrilous rumour and innuendo, The Watchers shine the unblinking spotlight of scrutiny on the ambitions of the Man Who Would Be King, of Wanganui and beyond...

So when did we become MORRISwatch????

More importantly why? A nonelected, nonentity with no money and no future!

Just in case there’s a soul in Wanganui who hasn’t already enjoyed a laugh at MickeyMayor being well and truly dicked at the rugby today, apparently he even had to take his baby down to heavy the wags waving a banner in his face saying: No more Laws – Fitzy for mayor.

After all the ratepayers money he’s sprayed on the game you’d think a man would have bought himself a bit of respect, not to mention votes, eh Mickey?

Since box-ticking is now the officially sanctioned Wanganui pastime, we could all exercise our senses of irony by playing this little game, from yesterday’s Dominion Post article about mad leaders like Ludwig II of Bavaraia (who built lovely castles but was ruled unfit to govern) ..

“Diagnosing personality disorders is a skill, but conformity has an internationally accepted guide, the DSM4. Making an accepted diagnosis is a box-ticking exercise; a certain percentage of the classic symptoms needs to be present.

The histrionic personality disorder found in some actors, lawyers, and old-fashioned parsons has eight characteristic symptoms. Four of these need to be present for a diagnosis. The essential features are that the person should:

1 — constantly seek approval and praise;
2 — dislike being anywhere where they are not the centre of attention;
3 — have shallow and vacillating emotions and beliefs;
4 — be self-centred and short-term planners, and be angry if frustrated;
5 — be inappropriately concerned with physical appearances and gestures;
6 — be overemotional when displaying grief or welcome.
7 — display sexual behaviour that is inappropriately adventurous;
8 — make speeches that sound impressive but lack substance and detail.

Most of us can think of one leader who would have more than four of these boxes ticked.”

In the Sunday paper today the head of the diVision Wanganui political party actually offers a genuine insight into something that he’s extremely well qualified to pronounce on:

“The truth is that .. every public dollar spent by political parties is electioneering. They exist for one sole purpose – to gain and then regain power.”

Bullshit about the rugby. "Fitzy" is ichael Fitzgerald, the Wanhganui lock. A few of his mates showed their support of their mate & the mayor took it in good humour - in fact, i saw the dudes giving the mayor a few beers and they were laughing it up.

Stick to the facts, LW. the mayor won a shitload of votes on saturday but then again not many of the usual antii-Laws are rugbyheads.

.... THanks anony. I may not be much of a rugbyhead but even I knew "ichael Fitzgerald" was the Wanhganui lock. What the hell has that got to do with it? These people have decided they want "No more Laws", just like most of Wanganui. And they're not afraid to stand up and say it.

To borrow from his own delightful little lexicon, THE MAYOR WAS DICKED! END OF STORY!

Well, Anon (ooh, such front row bravery....) I love rugby, have played it (in Wanganui as well, BTW) and can say without fear of contradiction that ML is about as much a rugby head as my Aunt Bridie, who keeps asking why those men keep trying to stick their heads up their team-mates' arses. Whatever the mayor achieved at the rugby was not popularity. Once again, he set his sights low (ie the second-tier competition) and taken it as read that he is now popular because he went to the game. It is poossible to love the arts and rugby, moron. Ever heard of Chris Laidlaw? David Kirk? As for DSM4, I had a wonderful conversation with a professional about this once, and he told me that Laws passed the "Am I a sociopath" test with flying colours.

I'd agree, that is all the mayor wants ... more votes as he knows he has to stay in this little town, no more 'big time ' in Wellington for this little guy, Wanganui is the end of the road.

Mickey,
You seriously wasted ratepayers money buying balls for the crowd, they obviously have them already, as the 'No more Laws' banner shows.
No Mickey, what you need is the Mayoral cheer-leading squad.
Led out by Deputy Dot herself, cause she knows how to chant your name better then anyone, the Vision lackeys can run out onto the field at half time and do some moves for us. Of course the Pep wont be able to make it cause she lives in Wellington now so you will have to bring in some ring ins.
Bob and Nigel will be prefect, and Rangi will volunteer without being asked.
Cheer-leading costumes are what it's all about of course, the crowd are going to want to see some flesh, so I'm suggesting tight little tops ( showing the midriff) and those short little pleated skirts.
That means Bob, clean underwear please and Nigel, no g strings.
At the end of your routine you can all bend over and lift your skirts. Printed on your asses .... Michael's Vision

"Wanganui is the end of the road."

Not if he can help it, he's trying really hard to reinvent himself, unfortunately, it's an up hill struggle for someone who can't keep his mouth shut. How many Islanders are on Wanganui's team?

Does ML really think he can muscle in on Ken Mair's statement of principal about maintenance of the landbank properties and try to win a bit of media kudos while trying to shaft the iwi on the other hand and get his pathetic little tame real estate agent (no not Bob Walker but Rowan McGregor)to flog off land potentially available to the landbank here for Treaty settlement, esp Harbour Endowment?

No wonder he's held in contempt on both sides of the river. My advice to the mayor would be to enjoy the "honeymoon" it while it lasts.

********

Who is this idiot?

Maybe
1. Tayor should have taken his responsibilities more seriously and not played Mickey's game by delaying his resignation in order to influence the timing of the byelection to suit his puppet master's timetable;

2. Maybe "our Sue" should have stopped bullshitting and playing her puppet master's game, and should have resigned while a by election was possible;

3. Maybe Nigel Morris should stop trying to cover his arse while playing his puppet master's game and keeping his nose in the doh!Vision trough while publicly trying to distance himself from the doh!Vision stink.

Maybe then these three sick individuals could hope to regain a smigeon of respect in a town that may have been gullible to fall for Mickey's line but will never forget what these sordid little puppets have done.

I don't think ML gives a s*** about winning votes or losing them. He has made it very plain to everyone that he was only going to be doing one term as mayor.

His aim was to change things and, rightly or wrongly, Wangas will never be the same.

He has also made it obvious that the future of Wangas is going to be left with its population with the Heart-of-W project. That should be the primary focus and the question is how come there have been no leaks from council when all the councillors and staff must all have been briefed surely.

Who knows about it? Let's have some inside goss.

Tell that to all the little community groups and large ones, he has manage to piss off in the last two years, they are all too scared to view their grievances in public but will vote next October and tell their mates what a crap mayor we have. This mayor needs this town more than Wanganui needs him.

Anonymous said...

Last week in the Chron, the editor asked who would be standing up at the next election, perhaps it's time to look at who would be in ML's team? Any suggestions?

ML is a rugby lover for chrissakes. His book on Norm Hewitt proves that & he hosts a weekly show on SKY Rugby. The criticism of his involvement is pathetic. Doesnt he also write a regular column in NZ Rugby News or similar?

No, the staff haven't been briefed and even Sally is pulling her hair out over how the Diva is handling this project. The architects are coming down to try and 'engaged' the public, smile politely at Laws ( laughing behind his back) and show us what we've brought for a 'shit' load of money.
