The answer is blowin' in the wind

We've waited and waited and waited some more... months, in fact... after first hearing of this story, first in deference to the fact that the informant who provided it was also helping Sean Hoskins write a piece for the Chronicle and asked that - just this once - LawsWatch not scoop Mr Maslin's increasingly incoherent organ. Second, because we wanted to give Cr Ray Stevens the freedom to act without being accused of being in some way an agent of the blog and those supposedly behind it at the time.

But two months after we (along with a number of other people) first heard the story - still nothing in the Chron. And with Sean's departure, nor is there ever likely to be. Now a commenter has reminded us of the issue:

Why haven't the Chronicle published Herr Laws' emailed threats against Cr. Ray Stevens, I wonder. Laws threatened Stevens with Code of Conduct action. Ray was telling everyone who would listen. I wonder why he suddenly went quiet...
Now one man's threat is another's bombastic, overbearing, dictatorial, antidemocratic (Enough adjectives... Ed.) chest beating. But the facts as we know them are these. On January 11, Ray Stevens somehow managed to slip through the Chron's censors, probably because the editor was on holiday and no one else was available to pop round to Guyton St for instructions from the Spin Fairy.

The letter wasn't exactly supportive of the Mayor, especially the nonsense he'd been spouting at the time about Wanganui Gas. (Steven Palmer had a similar letter published, and hence he got slagged off in the ecol-i e-newsletter the following day).

The Diva then apparently threatened Cr Stevens with a code of conduct complaint, thus proving once and for all that he has no sense of either irony or shame. Watchers all over Wanganui were breaking their ribs laughing about this, and one thought to call Sean Hoskins, who called Stevens, who gave him the story.

While in any other town those events would be extraordinary enough, in present day Lawsville they're pretty much run-of-the-mill. Where things really start getting extraordinary is what happened next.

When another Watcher called Sean that afternoon to check on the progress of the story, our intrepid journalist started blustering about some other email correspondence with the Diva that had been forwarded to him by someone calling himself Zimmerman in which he (Zimmerman) was rude about the mayor, and the mayor was apparently rude about him.

Sean admitted he figured Zimmerman probably wasn't real (our Sean mightn't have figured out all the machinations of Guyton Street, but he knows his Bob Dylan). But said he was going to sit on the Stevens story anyway till he could confirm or otherwise the existence of this Zimmerman.

The now incredulous Watcher asked what on earth Zimmerman had to do with Stevens. It was obvious, at least to the newshounds at the Chron - they both had received unfortunate responses from the Diva.

So... just so we're familiar with Mr Maslin's newsgathering modus operandi...

  1. Link together two unrelated stories, one of which is almost certainly false, on the flimsiest of threads.
  2. Then hold back publication of one story till you can prove the veracity of the probably false one (a logic puzzle which could keep one busy for hours... oh wait, that was the point).
  3. If step 2 fails, publish neither.
Then later in the piece, Stevens allegedly asked Sean to hold off till his lawyer checked the Mayor's message for defamation. And whilst any other news organisation would have said "no way, you gave us an interview of your own free will and we're running with the story, sorry", the Chron evidently obliged.

Watchers have been waiting... and waiting... for this legal opinion to come through and for Cr Stevens to confirm what happens next. But we're beginning to think this story is much like the Mayor's credibility - gone, never to return.

So just what is happening here?

What was the content of the Mayor's email to Cr Stevens?

Why hasn't the Chron run the story?

Why hasn't Cr Stevens pursued the matter? Even if the email isn't defamatory, if it's contents are as reported there are still questions to be asked about the Diva's methods of attempting to silence his critics on Council.

Oh... and who is Mr Zimmerman and how'd he know to gather together a collection of titillating emails right when Sean needed to be distracted from the Stevens story?

Comments on this post are now closed.

If we had reporters in this town they could uncover so many of the Diva's more interesting e-mails. I like the one he tells the school boy to piss off myself, now that's telling outsiders how this town really operates .. i.e. being a buly boy is the norm.

More unsubstantiated waffle...

The chron doesnt report this tripe as it requires little things like facts. Ah lawswatch where are the inside leaks, the exposes, the so-called nitty gritty. So many staff on the line you should have leaks tripping over themselves with confidential papers.

I am afraid you have turned into the toothless old cat people havent the heart to put down. You can see it twitching in its sleep while its on the perfect dream hunt, but in reality everyone just smiles and humours it as it is no threat to anyone or anything.

It gets worse on the Stevens story. When Ray's marriage failed, Laws and Colin Whitlock had a meeting with him during which Laws told Stevens to take as much time off as he needed.

During the by-election campaign Laws threatened to publish Stevens' attendance record at Council for the same period to shut him up.

What a low life.

Anonymous said...

The Chron could probably fill a whole issue with just the hysterical emails they have received from Mickey and his spin fairy on the rare occasions they have stepped out of line and done something to earn his displeasure.

pip's right. Can we have some decent leaks too please ?

Which in turn require little things like paid reporters with the time and resources to uncover them.

Here's an idea. Such reporters could be funded, say, out of the multiple millions you made selling advertising in NZ and Australia... then you you could print stuff on paper and even deliver it to people's houses!!

And then those reporters, backed by a fearless editor, could actually hold elected officials to account.

Then no one would need to publish an unfunded blog which attempts to seek some accountability by asking those involved to bypass the toothless media we actually have and make this correspondence public.

See? We can state the blindingly obvious too.

So many staff on the line you should have leaks tripping over themselves with confidential papers.

So if your livelihood was on the line, you'd respond by doing something which would anger an already capricious boss, probably instigate a witch hunt, and greatly increase your chances of being amongst those who were picked out of cowering hordes for execution?

Wait till after they've been chosen. Unless the payouts are sufficiently large or the security guards who march them out of the building are particularly effective.

So tell us, we're equally divided here at the Cave. Some of us believe you truly can't parse a simple post and thus don't get it.

Then there are those who think you wilfully misunderstand and hope that other visitors will be led up the same garden path. Can you settle the bet?

This is a piss poor excuse for a mayor we've got here in Whanganui.

Of course the story's drivel, Michael, of course you didn't email Ray Stevens with these threats. Just like you didn't realise Antoinette Beck was a false name, and you misunderstood the reasons for Auckland's quoted 200% rates increase, and you didn't know Larry Mitchell had used bogus comparisons in his report.

Of course we believe you Michael. We know you've lied and lied and lied your way through your entire political career, but we realise that you've reformed now, you're a new man today.

Of course we trust whatever you say, Michael.

Obviously Mickey is getting increasingly desperate. Does he really think anyone believes these unconvincing denials? Why does he bother?

A couple of weeks ago he was denying the existence of that letter to the Chronicle slagging people off on the basis of where they are from. Now he's denying the existence of a story that's been all around town for a couple of months and which Sean was talking about before he got muzzled by Mickey and/or the spin fairy.

Why do you bother to print this rubbish from him, LawsWatch?

The Stevens story is interesting. There can only be one source because a private 3-person chat has to come from Ray Stevens. Why doesn't he have the bottle to produce the proof instead of making up gossip. C/mon Ray - are you gutless?

My GREATEST disappointment with LW is that not ONE confidential council doco has ended up in here. There are 13 councillors (incl the mayor) a dozen managers and despite that list, the WDC remains an impregnable fortress.
I'd like to ask Ray Stephens if he has the courage but a man who goes to less than half of his council meetings probably misses out on a ot of confidential business.
Also I thought this blog was moderated! Unsubstantiated stuff about Ray's private life is not a fit subject. Besides breaking up with your pasrtner isn't a reason to miss council meetings because Sue Pepperell did but still keeps up the attendances.

Go and ask Ray, I'm sure he'll confirm the e-mails, he likes to tell everyone in ear shot.

Forget the Michael, forget Ray, forget the rest of the dribble. LW you have so stepped over the line this time. You thought you were in trouble before. Well depicting the Mayor's PA as a little old dumpy grey haired lady in a floral dress. You are so in deep shite now, LW. She is the hardest worker in the office and by far the most attractive. You are so in trouble.

Anonymous said...

Bob Zimmerman = Ray Stevens.

Anonymous said...

As a council employee, I can tell you LW that your facts re Cr Stevens and the threatened C of C are only half right. The C of C was raised by the mayor (that part is right) but not over Stevens published views on Wg Gas. It was over Stevens accusing a council employee of having lied to the council - a claim that had no validity apparently and Stevens could not produce any proof when challenged. That e-mail circulated Guyon St and was relevant because Stevens had already been ticked off at a C of C for attempting to bully Keith Hindson. If you use the Official Info Act I'm sure you'll get the e-mails and the loser would be Stevens. I'm sure the mayor's office would willingly oblige - they've had Stevens in their sights for awhile. Quite a few people (about 30) saw the mayor's e-mail to Stevens.

WHERE'S THE PROOF??

Anonymous said...

You're not quite right on the Stevens/Laws e-mails because they've done their round at Council and its Stevens who comes across as the bully (ironically of the staff) not ML. However a good break though - that's more like it Lawswatch - keep it up!

Unsubstantiated stuff about Ray's private life is not a fit subject.

We did consider this matter, anon. The commenter merely referenced a break-up in order to establish background for a comment unrelated to the actual separation, did not apportion blame and in fact made no further comment on that aspect of the matter.

Given the importance of the information the comment conveyed and the fact that the separation is already widely known, we permitted the comment.

Our intention was not to cause Cr Stevens or his family any distress and we apologise if we did so.

Oh? Let's see her attendance figures then. The Manawatu Standard publishes their figures every six months, so why can't we have that here.

Besides breaking up with your pasrtner isn't a reason to miss council meetings - says the mayor here tonight.

*****
So why, oh mayor, did you make such a touching public gesture to Cr Stevens and say in front of councillors and staff that because of his personal problems you had told him to take as long as he needed ...

Of course, that was then and this is now and you have yet again been exposed for the charlatan you are.

Anonymous said...

None of this explains why the Chronicle, which is supposed to be a news paper, chose to suppress all of this in the middle of the by-election. What great copy. Both Mickey and Ray are good for a sound bite or two.

Ray can't have broken the code of conduct because he was expressing a personal opinion as Ray Stevens, gas station owner.

Anonymous said...

Just to report that I've seen the "offensive" e-mail too and earlier posters are correct. It was the deepest of ironies, perhaps, but the Diva was defending staff from Stevens and generally telling the pump jockey that he should get his facts right before accusing people of lying. It may be that a watcher misinterpreted what Ray said or that Ray deliberately misrepresented himself. It would be worth asking the said councillor himself wouldn't it, LW?

Anonymous said...

Dear Laws Watch,
Your argument does not hold water on the Ray Stevens marriage break-up. It was an anonymous comment by a poster and related to the private life of a councilor and was simply a malicious rumour. If you thought it was serious enough to apologise then delete it now. Show some control.

Presumably those "quite a few people" comprised the mayor's BP (Baying Pack) list which routinely gets sent copies of his bully-boy emails. Kiwiwebs and Display Associates get this sort of stuff, not to mention Barking Bob the land agent.

Anonymous said...

You're losing it, Mickey, your bullshit just isn't making sense. If Ray Stevens has a complaint against him by a WDC staff member, why was Mickey Mayor involved? The point here is Mickey's low-life hypocrisy - the Code of Conduct is a worthless document which breaches the bill of rights when he is required to abide by it, but he's quite happy to use it to attack a WDC Council member's right to freedom of speech.

Add to that the promise of help and support (made with Colin Whitlock present) first given then shown to be another lie, and you have a clear insight into Michael Laws' character. Which is to say he has no character whatsoever. And you people trust this man? Gullible.

I'm not surprised that the Mayor has not carried out his threat to Ray Stevens.

If Mickey's whining about Cr. Stevens' emails is true, which I doubt, what has Mickey succeeded in demonstrating? I'd say he's trying to show that Ray is as much of a low life as he is. The point, Mickey, is that you're a low life. No amount of people joining you down there can help that.

Bit off topic but....
Given the massive lack on interest in the arts festival and it's cancellation - could this be seen as a slice of luck that ratepayer $ was not put into the gallery?
It would appear that very few in Wanganui give a rats about the festival or the gallery. I blame "modern art" where a vase of vomit is now considered "art"

Anonymous said...

A case of vomit could be considered art if it were presented as a portrait of Michael Brian Laws.

Anonymous said...

I'd rather have M Laws run this city than R Stevens. Too many people in this blog need to get a life and then a job tho' not necessarily in that order. A partner would help too and maybe that's why the Vision team do so well & seem so adjusted. They have all three: lives, jobs & partners.

The open studios weekends are going ahead though, but beware, there may be something challenging through those doors. Pity about Wheelers Luck getting the axe.....I think these days people have to be hounded relentlessly a la the MAYORAL MILE media blitzkrieg (wonder how much rates money went down the gurgler and what the financial benefit to the city was for that little exercise) to get them off their lazy bums.

Anonymous said...

Wanganui's true support for the visual arts will be demonstrated during the open studio weekends. There's a reason why the open studios no longer coincide with the "Bloomin' Artz" (sic) festival, y'know.

Wanganui "Arts" festival was always performing and literary slanted anyway - aren't those the ones Mickey loves?

Anonymous said...

we`re talking here of performing arts
and i can say that if there isn`t sponsorship to advertise incoming events no one knows about them!
`river queen` premiere got heaps of advertising and hype--even(and make no mistake i am glad of this)the open studios event gets wanganui inc.support but plays etc fend for themselves-except for the graciousness of the local papers in articles and fee reductions
`little voice` has a cast of hard-working local actors and a fine crew-they deserve local support as they are part of the city`s soul
we struggle however and i do not believe we would get the good houses we do if we weren`t good-but letting people know we are performing costs us a huge cut of our takings and therefore doesn`t allow us to develop as we should

p.s.yvonne o1connor and her team work bloody hard

'Given the massive lack on interest in the arts festival and it's cancellation - could this be seen as a slice of luck that ratepayer $ was not put into the gallery?'

Given the fact these events were successful in past years maybe the only thing that has change is this councils attitude towards all the art forms over the last 18 mouths. So it is now having a negative effect on the community.

Anonymous said...

Frankly I think the art on display in Whanganui this weekend speaks for itself. Far more eloquently and graciously than Mickey Mayor. Why even the crappy old band hall looks great with artwork on the walls. The depth of talent more than matches the lowlife depths of Mickey.

Perhaps that's why he's so jealous.

Anonymous said...

Yvonne O'Connor is right to point the finger at Mickey and his pet mice (or is that rats - especially Nigelwho?)at Wanganui Inc.

While thousands of Wellingtonians and visitors celebrated the council-backed arts festival there they found the latest Winc "events trilogy" flyer in their mail boxes with NO mention of our arts festival.

Driving back, it's noticeably absent from the new billboards so it was no surprise to pick up the Comical and find it's had the plug pulled.

This is an inevitable consequence of the way this mayor has shut down any public scrutiny of the process by which he bullies his way to the cash for his favourites, and throttles those he didn't think of first.

Wonder what the idiot councillors who voted for this anti-democratic crap thought when they picked up their paper yesterday.

This town is on a fast track back to the Dark Ages, thanks to the fools who surround this madman.

Anonymous said...

Here's an example of Mickey white-anting Wanganui. One day at Council last week the comms officer was away. Mickey took the opportunity to order that his ambassador scheme replace the Open Studio banner as the feature item on the WDC website. The low-life well-poisoner shows his true nature. What a vindictive little toe-rag.

Anonymous said...

It's ironic to see the mayor citing lack of submissions to the annual plan supporting funding for the arts festival (even if he was .... wait for it .. wrong!)

Perhaps he could tell us (preferably via the Chronicle) just how many annual plan submissions were received for funding and/or other support involving ratepayers dollars for the River Queen premiere, mayoral mile or Boxing Day rock concert.

Anyway, he's made it abundantly clear he has no respect for the submission process (why bother when you're the referendumb king - though I don't recall any of Mickey's trilogy appearing on any referendumb either).

This mayor is full of shit!

So when the Gallery extension comes bottom of the referendum pile and when the Arts festival is cancelled due to poor ticket sales... this is the Council's doing? Is this not a touch patronising toward the Wanganui public who have made their choices?

Council has little (if any) sway on my choices. You are struggling and it shows.

It’s not surprising to see little Johnnie Maslin sucking up to sheriff Mickey over the gangfight at Guyton Corral. After all, little Johnnie Howard sucks up to sheriff Bush.

But the editorial in yesterday’s New Zealand Herald (“Gang patches nothing to do with councils”) makes clear that the grown ups at the Chron’s parent paper see things in a slightly more grown up fashion than their retard offspring.

Anonymous said...

The arts festival failed because only 14% of tickets were sold according to Y O'Connor. If that is true then it failed because Wanganui didn;t want to see what she had arranged which means the responsibility lies with the organisers for getting their market so wrong. As for Repertory, Joan: you are funded by the council I'm told so you & your fellow geriatrics can amuse yourselves at the ratepayers expense. They cancel Wheelers Luck but keep Rep's Little Voice - there's no justice in this world.

Tell you what, Mickey. Next time you have a bright idea for an "event" just keep your big mouth shut, don't use a cent of council money to promote or run it, and keep your mates at Wanganui Inc out of it. Put up $10,000 of your own money and leave it at that.

Of course, if it was, say, a mayoral wanking contest you could spend a month or two telling the good folks of Wangas what a disgusting habit that was, practised amd watched only by low-life perverts and dole bludgers. Just like you've done for the arts in this town.

Let's see what sort of turnout you get.
