'ello 'ello 'ello, what have we here then?

Firstly, let us say we have no interest whatsoever in where our police chief parks his long baton of an evening (we're referring here to whose nightstand it's left on, of course. Please get your minds out the gutter).

But when he appears alongside the Diva at the
last gasp of the draft Annual Plan hearing and grabs $50,000 of our hard-earned rates money to fund some sort of Night Riders arrangement, our collective ears perk up.

"Trained volunteers walking the street – especially Victoria Ave and its surrounds – during the hours of darkness and liasing directly with the police watch house" is the way the Diva described it. And just how will these volunteers be vetted?

Anyone who's ever encountered a parking warden will know that the desire to be in a position of authority over others is inversely proportional to the suitability of that person to do so.

And how and where will they be trained? Is Wanganui to get a provincial version of those desert camps we've seen on TV, with volunteers crawling beneath barbed wire while live ammunition is discharged over their heads?

What happens when they're marching up Victoria Ave and spy a wrong-doer? If Wanganui is six police persons short, the chances of uniformed back-up arriving seems pretty slim. Perhaps the Diva will be at the head of his crack unit and give them a stern talking to?

But something tells us he won't actually be out there on the front lines.

Meanwhile, the $50,000 looks like it's just seed money. Perhaps there's a need for a poll to determine whether it's a popular idea, in which case we're sure the Diva know just the woman for the job - that well-known pollster Miss Antoinette Beck.

The rest of the dosh will come, apparently, from sponsors. “There is also the obvious ability to raise additional funds from other sources and from sponsorship. And indications are there are no shortage of responsible, community-minded citizens who want to contribute to keeping Wanganui people safe", the Diva says.

So Hamburglar might have to beware after all. McCops... coming soon to a street near you. And with all that walking around to be done, we have the perfect moniker for the Diva's footsoldiers - The Fallen Arches.

Where do I join up? I mean, $50,000 has to go a long way among volunteers, surely. I think we should especially target white collar crime along Guyton St.

Seems an extraordinary waste of money: after all, Victoria Avenue is fully covered by CCTV, which has all but eradicated street violence along there, well before Lawsy came along.

Talk about self-inflicted backspin, it looks like Laws Watch has reason to be deeply grateful to the Diva and his Spin Fairy for this morning's great piece of promotion. It must be a slow news day in Wangavegas, but it still would take the spinmeister himself to get the issues being raised here onto the front page like this.

So, welcome all you good folk of the River City who want to know what's really going on in the old hometown.

It is rumoured locally that Laws has been bluntly advised to pull his head in. Certainly this morning's Chron seems evidence of that. Gone is the snarling loser, hello to Mr. Funny. Perhaps he took some lessons from Alistair Campbell.

Meanwhile, will anyone think there's any point in talking to the ombudsman, who's in town next week?

Laws turned a negative into a positive. It's called smarts.

Sorry it's just Laws finally having his bottom spanked. And been told to pull his head in, that's the word on the street, finally the Vision party 'making' a stand.!

Boy. have you got that wrong! The Vision team is stronger than ever as a result of the Code hearings and Laws has cowered ALL his opposition on council. You should be in the audience a little more at council meetings - it's an art form now/ One to replace the Sarjeant it seems.

I daresay you meant to say "cowed". More to the point, what an incompetent way to run a town: deny yourself the expertise of 5 experienced councillors.

It might well be an art form, but like any other performance it has no substance. The Sarjeant is renowned all over the world: you can't replace that. Spin Micky spin.

you are Carol webb. Give it up Carol - Game's over. By the way - McGregor & Wills arent Vision councillors and they voted to exonerate Laws. Your evidence wasnt up to ot & the code complainants were further humiliated by having that old duffer Moody represent them.

Let's see. Council record so far -
Sarjeant extension - gone.
Nil rates increase - unanimous
Referendum - vast majority reject both sarjeant (2nd last) & public art (last).
Arts supporters Palmer & Mitchell-Anyon poll 15th and 16th at last council election.
Oh, it's not even a game. It's like the Lions playing the All Black. All froth & fury for 10 minutes and then himuliation for the next 70.

What astonishing acheivements! It'll be great when you actually do something. Oh, you forgot to mention the Film Festival in your list of things you've damaged.

Sarjeant extension is in the Heart of Wanganui. Not gone, by the way. Your game is all spin. Perhaps you're Clive Woodward.

Jerk. The Film festival was called off by Marion Campbell not Laws & not council. she said it was too much wotk. As for the Serjeant extension - it's all over. I'll make it simple for you - WE DON"T WANT IT IN WANGANUI and we never did. Laws just carried out our will, as he's paid to do.

I can understand why you wouldn't want the Warren Mahoney design, but what's wrong with extending the gallery? Do you actually know anything about art?

"The Film festival was called off by Marion Campbell not Laws & not council. she said it was too much wotk."

That's the fourth different explanation I've heard. First they ran out of money, then they ran out of time, now Marion pulled the plug? Seems a funny thing to do, to get $20,000 from Micky then just can it.

The 'Heart Project' puts the extension back on the plans ... just might cost more ......

Anonymous said...

... might cost less too. As a Wanganui ratepayer I wasn't looking forward to coughing up $4.5m for a building that few visit or use. Put in the Splash centre I say, or towards the riverfront development or Castlecliff Beach. Somewhere where all us plebs can enjoy it and not just the hoity-toity few.

"Hoity toity few"? What a lot of shit you are spouting. Divisive, offensive, narrow minded bollocks. What gives you the slightest right to label people? What business is it of yours what others enjoy? What a little Hitler, laying down the law for all, unable to acknowledge that other people pay rates too. Tiny little intellect, afraid of what you don't understand.

It was only 2.6 until Vision got in, and the pool ( which I do not have a problem with, will now cost 2.5, not much in it, apart from loosing the 2.6 goverment imput to the project.

What the hell set anon off over hoity-toity. The comment was right: no-one wants the Sarjeant extension except arts bigots and wannabes. Splash, splash, girls & boys.

Can we go back to the night patrols that started this theme?
Pettis is in the paper this morning saying that Wangas having six less cops is not due to population and Chester Borrows has promised 10 extra cops for Wanganui. The council has committed $50K for their community patrols - why does the ratepayer have to take over a central govt responsibility? If someone could help me out ...

I've just assumed that if all Laws' fantasies come true, the local militia will form the central core of his own Blackshirts. I mean, come on, does anyone take this seriously? I'm walking home on Friday night. Dad's Army approaches:

"What are you up to?"
"Go get fucked you wannabe cop."

Dad's Army will have no more power than any individual. My advice is, if you meet these thugs on a dark night, run. I look forward to their first confrontation with the Mongrel Mob. What a joke.
