Flushed with a lack of success

Newly appointed Cultural Czarina Sally Patrick has already hit the first speed bump on the road to glory paved for her by the Diva.

Stuffing the Sarjeant overflow into the Alexander Library via a "corridor" isn't a starter, according to parks and culture manager Keith Hindson. This, Watchers will remember, was floated by the Diva at the last Mayoral forum as a way of preserving and protecting the Sarjeant art overflow (and thus avoiding trouble with donors) whilst still being perceived by his uncultured support base as not giving a damn about art.

But Hindson had already knocked that idea on the head back in 2004, as previously noted by LawsWatch and finally woken up to in today's Chron, concluding it was "not a viable option". He pointed out that not only were works of art at risk, but possibly also staff and the public. Trying to squeeze part of the Gallery into a library which is only 750 square metres would lead to:

  • An increase in the cost of services, infrastructure and staff required to manage two independent buildings.
  • Curtailment of current activity, services and events.
  • Degradation of the Sarjeant’s “flagship” status.
  • No additional gallery display space to facilitate community-related events.
  • No improvement in the collection storage conditions and capacity.
  • Sending the "wrong message" about the status of the arts in Wanganui.
  • Creating uncertainty about the future of the Gallery (a bit late to worrry about that now, we suggest).
  • The possibility of some of the collection having to be sold off.
None of this is new, of course. But with the newly appointed Ms Patrick no doubt keen to put her stamp on things as "Cultural Manager"where does this leave Mr Hindson, quoted as "Culture Manager" and, most importantly, as pouring cold water all over the Diva's meisterplan?

As First Mate Warburton reshuffles the chairs on Captain Laws's Titanic, it seems some may get hurled overboard.

Love the 'double' extension Sally, good to see you know something about modern art and contemporary design.

I think Sally does need to be given a chance, and encouraged to protected the gallery from Laws. It really just depends how strong she is.

Oh, riiight, so it's Sally's fault. Hello! This shit is plopping out of Michael Laws and no-one else.

Wrong. The mayor didn't restructure the cultural facilities but he and his entire council have supported their new CEO. You can't "blame" one person - try a chief executive, a mayor and 11 councillors.
Some of you guys need to get over this victim mentality because it isn't getting you anywhere.

PROVE IT anon!

It seems this commenter is telling tales out of school (or in local govt parlance, is breaching meeting confidentiality).

There has been no public indication that the "entire council" supported the ceo on the restructure, presumably because the ceo's report was taken in the confidential section of both strategy and council meetings.

Now it seems we are being told by anonymickey the alleged result of that vote.

Can he also be the one who tipped off the Chron that Milbank was a gonner, while the ceo was saying no decisions had been made on staff or structures at the gallery and that Sally Patrick would be making those decisions?

That makes the CEO a liar, doesn't it?

Another unsavoury little mayoral tic seems to be that he leaks like a sieve.

The mayor didn't restructure the cultural facilities

oh bullshit. Would the director's position be disappearing if Laws hadn't launched his attacks? This is a significant policy shift and its been acheived by stealth, as opposed to the consultative approach to any significant alteration to the LTCCP with which WDC are charged. You cannot run a gallery of the Sarjeant's national status without a director, and the logical conclusion is that WDC are deliberately degrading the Gallery. Why would they do this if they have the best interests of Wanganui in mind?

About a year ago the mayor told the Chron, all about how he wanted to restructure Queen's Park, I'll try and find the article. The new CEO is just following orders.
