Did someone mention buns?

As that fine author Danielle Steel once said: "A bad review is like baking a cake with all the best ingredients and having someone sit on it". The poor Diva's buns must be feeling a little flat after his recent performance as a political "expert".

Even before the big night, poor reviews were to be found, like this from Ana Samways in the Herald:

Tauranga's electorate scrap has left a trail of confusion in its wake. On Campbell Live on Wednesday night know-it-all political commentator Michael Laws was asked about Winston Peters' chances. He said Bob Clarkson and Peters had probably both been damaged by the debacle and then offered his expert opinion on who might benefit. "It's going to hurt them and I think Mr Nash would probably be the repository of that dismay." John Campbell asked: "Can he [Nash] win?" To which Laws replied: "Yes, he can, but he's actually going to have to say what I've done for Tauranga and what I'm going to do and I haven't heard that yet." Could that be because Stuart Nash is standing in Epsom? Small but important point that obviously passed Laws and Campbell by.
And after the event, the reviews aren't much better. Kerre Woodham, again in the Herald:

John Campbell and his four experts were stuck behind desks on a dull beige set. Therese Arsenau was a wonderful commentator - the find of the night - and Deborah Coddington offered interesting insights, pointing out that Act had often voted with the Greens on issues of personal responsibility. Andrew Little was competent and Michael Laws was revelling in being able to use words like testicle, but I missed a lot of what he said as I was appalled by his bizarre eye make-up. (I know it's bourgeois to mention it, and Ma'a Nonu wears his unashamedly, but Ma'a is cool and Michael is not.)
Early days yet, of course. No doubt other reviewers will ponder the performance in due course. If we find any, we'll update you. In the meantime, Isaac Asimov said "From my close observation of writers... they fall into two groups: 1) those who bleed copiously and visibly at any bad review, and 2) those who bleed copiously and secretly at any bad review." We hope for the sake of his drycleaners, the Diva is in the latter category.

Update (11.30pm): A commenter says "Sadly you guys missed Jane Bowron's complimentary review of the mayor in today's Dom-Post", presumably referring to this piece in which Bowron indeed says "TV3's results might have been way behind TV One's and the graphics of the numbers trailing along the bottom of the screen hard to read, but at least Campbell and his panel of four put out personality". Just what "personality" the Diva brought to the evening is elucidated upon a little later, however:

There were heated exchanges between Canterbury University political scientist Therese Arseneau and Laws, with Campbell at one stage adjudicating between a pro crotch-grabbing lobby (made up of Laws and retiring ACT MP Deborah Coddington) and the antis (Arseneau and union official Andrew Little).
And, in more than 1,000 words, that's the only mention the Diva gets. We're sure being portrayed as "pro crotch-grabbing" is considered complimentary somewhere. Michael Jackson's ranch, for instance.

It's been interesting being out and about in WangaVegas today. Everyone I talked to said they'd stayed away from TV3 because the prospect of watching the Diva wank his way through election night was just toooo vomit-inducing.

Yes, I didn't watch it for the same reason. Can Laws Watch find out the ratings for each channel?

Kerre Woodham (quoted in this post) isn’t the only one to have a problem with what she calls the bizarre eye-makeup (… but I missed a lot of what he said as I was appalled by his bizarre eye make-up).

Here’s Jane Clifton (Political Animals) recalling the Diva's inglorious days in Wellington before Antoinette Beck conspired to get him out by lunchtime:

Another oddity which troubled us was the mascara, and what may also have been eyeliner or kohl of some kind. There was very often a dark sortr of wash below Laws’s eyes .. suggestive of sweat-induced mascara run. And at the best times his eyes were suspiciously heavily delineated.

Oh and here’s Clifton sharing with us that election night reviewers aren’t the first, and won’t be the last, inhabitants of the political zoo to find the Diva loathsome:

Suffice to say, he was the most loathed man in the National Party caucus from the word go – even more despised than Winston Peters came to be.

So, how'd the council meeting go today? I heard Mickey got humiliated over the 'h'. And an earbashing from Helen.

And what's this about Ron "skill set" Janes?

A man of his age needs all the help he can get, even eye make-up. At 50 something he still looks pretty fit.

I'm sure Helen has the Diva well under control. I also have had good reports about the new CEO. That he will be more then a match for the Diva.

Talking with a friend from Invercargill at the weekend, I asked why he thought Laws was so keen to have a go at Tim Shadbolt over the Dancing with the Stars"

"The whole sorry saga did little to promote Wanganui and I would be surprised if he doesn’t become another one term Mayor."

When did Laws have a go at Tim? Is not our Dot down in the deep South right now with that said mayor?

Anonymous said...

Who cares where "our Dot" is, Michael?

Laws had a go at Tim on radio and in his column. Sounded like pure malevolent jealousy at the time and no doubt he's already got a letter off to the Dancing with the Stars people trying to convince them they need his fancy footwork next time around.

Dotty's probably down there job hunting because she's sure going to be needing somewhere to go when she gets the heave in October 2007, along with the Diva.

The jealousy in here is amazing.
Sadly you guys missed Jane Bowron's complimentary review of the mayor in todays's Dom-Post, and Bob Jones in my Herald on Sunday. Oh dear, you Wangas losers. Love checking out this blog because youre all so SMALL town.

Actually most of the people I've talked to said that Laws did a great job on TV3. He was also on TV1's Sunday programme last night which suggests that the top media
finds him attracive. Don't worry, Michael - beautiful partner, beautiful baby, you're a licky man.

Can't see our mayor being remotely jealous of Shadbolt who needs to be mayor for his income, while Laws gives his away. And I don't see Tim-baby having his own radio or TV shows or treating his critics like sport - seal-shooting.

You didn't need to watch tv to know Laws was off wanking himself silly in Auckland for the weekend.

Just check back on the dearth of "LawsMob" comments on this blog. Seems LawsMob membership actually totals 1 and that's the Diva him/herself.

Surely you can find someone to ghost-write your praises when you're out of town, Michael?

Has anyone caught up with the new Council Report that's on the council website? That's OUR money they're spending.

Was that Ross M-A in Sat's paper saying that they SHOULD sell
'Flight into Egypt'?? What the Hell has he been smoking?

Anonymous said...

Forget this personal abuse, please.
I also read Ross' letter in which he completely undermined Jodie. What gives with that man? I thought he was on our side.

Ross MA committed heresy on Saturday. Not. Sell the lot, i say.

No, Michael. You don't see Tim slagging off citizens who attend council meetings.

As the Dominion Post editorialised last week:

“... making hard decisions does not have to mean villifying anybody who dares to object. The best mayors are not just those who balance their councils' books, but those with a vision who are able to rally their communities around it.

“Mr Laws could learn much from Mr Shadbolt.
....
“Mr Laws' profile has also risen during his time in the mayoral chair, but Wanganui has not benefited from the exposure."

Michael has a problem all right. He may be able to control Mas and every word he writes but he can't control the Domion Post and he can't control Laws Watch.

Go suck on that, Michael.

Maybe Ross is trying to catch the Diva's eye in hopes of being invited to stand for diVision in the by-election, like he was last year.

Anonymous said...

I don't know which I find the more unbelievable.
1. Ross Mitchell Anyon wanting to join Vision;
2. Vision wanting Ross.
Let's just put that rumour to bed, shall we? The sad thing about Wanga-noo-ee is that 99% of rumours turn out to be shit unlike other places where its roughly a 50/50 ratio.

I thought John Cambell did a good job of controlling Laws, and the other panelists had a couple of laughs at his expense (which he joined - to his credit). He repeated several times, with what sounded like satisfaction, his belief that "there's a real division in this country". When it comes down to it, either you are entertained by Michael or you aren't.

I see the anonymous personal abuse is back. Now Lawswatch apparently is no longer carolmatt! It has doubled in size!! We are carolmattdelphineemma. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Morgs, your remarks about Carol say nothing about her. I enjoy your columns but I think you should leave individuals out of them.
