And it's goodnight from him

And so, at at 10pm on Thursday October 27, Watchers in Porritt St Wanganui, looked out their windows and saw the lights going out on yet another mayoral day at the office, the morning spent in frantic self-promotion on Radio Lifeless, the afternoon spent micro-managing the Council staff (how did they manage before the Diva, we wonder?), the dawn hours and the evening spent, as usual, pouring scorn and abuse on all who would dare question his reign...

That was fun - you guys are really easy to stir up. Now my fun completed I'm going to sign off until my next trip here.

Has Leo got the timer set, Mickey? Is that part of the domestic harmony deal you have cut? Like the dogs on the beaches curfew, really, isn't it? See you back here at the usual time tomorrow a.m. then, Mickey. But they'll love this at Guyton St in the morning ... don't you guys?

And now you've made me mayor as well, LawsWatch. I love you guys - you're so phobic that every criticism must come from His Divine Majesty when most of Wanganui think you're a bunch of self-described obsessives. You've made an old stirrer so very happy this morning.

Michael Laws is the best thing ever to happen to Carol, Matt and the other dorks in here because he gives their lives meaning. They would just sell blinds and crap art without him. Oops sorry, they do.

Welcome back, Michael

Anonymous said...

Where's Marion?

Anonymous said...

Since it's Colin's last day you'd like to explain the book-writing deal to us, Michael.

ie just who is paying for it and when was it adopted as a resolution of this council?

Thank You

Here you go again!
I love you guys. I'd like to wrap you all in my arms, give you a big kiss and all the love you obviously missed as kids. How to sabotage a blog with one easy entry.

Q: Does this blog ever do other than go around in circles? For example, does it ever contact the council or the mayor or councillors direct and ask them any of these questions? Asking them in here isn't likely to get an answer is it?

Anonymous said...

You try getting a straight answer from this council

Anonymous said...

Which councillor would you suggest we ask for confirmation that the Whitlock book deal has been ratified by the council? Or how much it's going to cost? Or who is paying for it? Or who is publishing it?

Once council member seems uniquely qualified to answer those questions but unfortunately he's now known for his honesty or openness.

Wonder how Colin feels about being used as a political pawn like this?

It's sad to see him going out on such a bum note (from the mayoral trumpet) after doing his best for Wanga for so many years.

Anonymous said...

So, Laws has already got his mug up on the council chamber wall along with all those other ex-mayors.

Anonymous said...

And David Warburton already has his name on the honours board as the CEO. So what? But did you note that some of the art in the council chamber is from the Sarjeant and some from the mayor's private collection?

Anonymous said...

The point is that other mayors' portraits didn't appear until after their terms had finished. Mickey's ego couldn't wait that long, so he did the official equivalent of wetting his pants.

It is customary for the photo of the Mayor to be hung only after the mayor has been defeated or retired from office.
This is also customary in Parliament where the photo of a PM only goes up after the fact.
Guess Micky just likes looking at himself.

Anonymous said...

He just can't wait to be an ex-mayor and he's sure going the right way about getting there.

New Plymouth is back in the news for its arts-friendly initiatives - now unveilling a Len Lye sculpture by the boardwalk.

Now, what did diVision pre-election policy say about public art?

Have you considered the possibility, Laws Watch, that the curious silence that descended on this blog as Mickey took off to Oz (and ended when he landed again) could be because he took the entire membership of LawsMob with him?

Any person who posts abusive personal remarks here should probably be made aware that misuse of their telephone line (internet connection etc.) to send abusive messages is illegal. You might remain anonymous to the watchers, but you wouldn't to the cops.

A request from the nz police would probably return your physical address the same day.

Keep it up and I'll lay a complaint myself.

How much is Council paying Colin Whitlock to write a book?

Anonymous said...

Will they be giving him an advance on his royalties? Who's the publisher? Or will Council be touting the book to publishers once Colin's whipped up a first draft? Isn't it a bit weird that the Mayor is a publisher and now Council are doing a book? I remember Mickey going on about it in fact. In the Chron. Do you suppose he declared a conflict of interest? Bit weird for someone with a conflict of interest to be the cheif spokesperson for a project, don't you think?

Oh, and good luck going to the cops - I think you might find they're a little busy

It's a common event, lawrence; lawsmob will deliberately misquote you saying something wrong, then slag you off for being wrong. He thinks it's clever, or something.

Anonymous said...

Is this what this blog has now descended to? It was meant to break stories the mainstream media wouldn't but instead its all abuse & bitchiness and nasty innuendo. Now we're trying to play spot the anon poster!

Anonymous said...

Does that mean you want to know about Colin's book too?

Anonymous said...

Troll.

Anonymous said...

Like the picture witht this story, Laws Watch. That's just how he comes across when he's screaming abuse on this blog.

Anonymous said...

That's not a troll, it's a party political message from Vision Wanganui.

Anonymous said...

That picture of Mickey is from the Herald interview, isn't it? Where he had to stand on a pile of magazines so that the photographer (who thought they'd seen histrionics from models) could snap him as the focal point of his painting. Mickey set it up: that's how he likes to be seen. It reminds me of one of the disposable personae that teen-agers adopt in place of adulthood.

when you provide proof the mayor visits and contributes to this blog, we'll take you seriously.

How many of you are there in there? Perhaps your multiple personalities are confused: the top of the page says "jester". As in "poking fun", as in "not to be taken entirely seriouly." Don't like it? Read something else.

May I make a serious suggestion?

I see (letters in the Chron today) that the Whanganui Community Foundation is running a two-day course for chairpeople.

How about Michael taking along Dotty and Nicki and the rest of them?

He can learn about meeting etiquette, respecting the views and opinions of others at the table, etc, and they can learn how do stay in control of meetings where there's a big-mouthed, bad mannered buffoon sitting alongside them.

How about it, Michael?

Anonymous said...

Judith Timpany should first explain how she lost $20m of Wanganui's money, or is that part of good chairmanship?
By the way, we're still looking for proof out here that the mayor posts. Assertion is not proof, Carol.

What's the matter Mickey? haven't you got your hands on enough pork barrels already?

Anonymous said...

I'm sure she didn't spend it on portraits of herself, anyway.

Anonymous said...

It is unsubstantiated rubbish that the Whanganui Community Foundation has lost $20m as anon 1.10pm says.

Like the Mayor, who has fostered this myth, anon( and others who have fallen for the same line) have chosen to take a single years investment result, rather than the life of the fund to date.

Even then, just where anon gets the $20m tag from is not clear, even Mayor Laws stated only $11m.

To make any accusation , like any investment advisor would do, you would have to calculate the %return over time.

It would have been unusual for the professional fund managers who managed the Foundation portfolio at the time not to invest a proportion overseas, as overseas equities were returning more than 30% pa prior to the tech crash and the Asian crisis, while the NZ equities were just 6-7% return.

I don't possess the accurate figures for the Foundation portfolio, but they were published some time ago and from memory the startup capital increased by about $23M over the initial years, lost about half of that increase over about a two year period, but has since regained that setback. Along the way they continued to distribute funds to the community.

It is a cheap shot to slag either the Chairman or the CEO - the portfolio was managed by a professional fund manager ( as every community fund is).

The Trustees though, wisely made a decision at the time to stay with most of their overseas investments.

I believe that Michael Cullen in defending the performance of the Cullen Fund and the ACC portfolio, was critical of those community trusts that paniced and sold at the bottom of the market, thereby negating any chance of recovery, as has proved to be the case.

Just like with forestry investment , there are plenty of armchair critics who will give you
their expert advice after the event, but can they tell me the log prices, or the value of equities in three/five/ten years
time, as that is what some seem to believe that trustees of the Whanganui Community Foundation or District Councillors should be able to do.
