Roll up the red carpet, they need it in Toronto

world (n)
The earth.
The universe.
The earth with its inhabitants.
The inhabitants of the earth; the human race.

pre·miere or pre·mière(n)
The first public performance, as of a movie or play.

Ah, those were giddy times back in July, when the chill winter mists hanging over the Whanganui cleared and the poor folks stopped in their daily toil to read the word from their beloved leaders.

On July 21st they picked up their hand-set daily bulletin and saw to their amazement that their raw, humble settlement was to host a World Premiere. (This was, remember, before Hollywood was even invented.) “Roll out the red carpet .... city to host River Queen premiere” screamed the headline that glorious day. “Roll out the red carpet – Wanganui will hold the world premiere of the River Queen” said the scribe’s story.

The very next day there was more. As the citizens queued outside their local newspaper office in the pouring rain, the billboard went up: “River Queen gets $150,000 premiere grant”. They waited for the warm newsprint to be handed out, hot off the press and with trembling hands read “Wanganui District Council is to contribute $150,000 toward the world premiere of River Queen in Wanganui - once it knows when and where the film can be screened.”

Today, with spring in the air and blossom on the trees, their daily bulletin answered that question. 'Tis... TORONTO! The crowd fell silent. Nobody had heard of Toronto. Was it perhaps a Maori settlement buried deep in the impenetrable bush up the river, they wondered.

Some of the artistic types reminded their fellow citizens they’d warned them not to listen to that snake-oil salesman - christened by a scribe in faraway Auckland as the Queen of the Whanganui - who had come to town the previous year promising to put their humble town on the map.

All along the rough-sawn walls of the newspaper office, tattered and fading billboards reminded them that that the River Queen waka was as good as sunk the day the hoity-toity mob from City Hall jumped on board.

So they sighed and went about their toil, as honest folk do to this day ...and it's said that if one listens closely just as the early mist rises off the Whanganui, one can hear an ethereal sobbing emanating from the direction of City Hall.

'Tis the ghost, some say, of the old settlement's credibility, weeping for having lost to those arty Toronoto types, them and their cursed shoe museum.

Dotty's exciting news:

Wanganui today declared war on Canada. Follwing the pre-emptive strike launched against the House of Saud, and bouyed by this success, Wanganui forces, led by Field Marshall Laws, set off on a fleet of jetskis for Northern Climes.

Weeks passed with no word from the brave troops, but then on the morn of the second month, a call was heard. There, on the horizon, battered and bruised but ultimately victorious, the loyal forces of Vision massed, the River Queen premiere in tow.

Rejoice! Came the word from Council.

$150,000 seems an awful lot to pay for a trainwreck.

"$150,000 seems an awful lot to pay for a trainwreck."

You mean shipwreck, surely?

Stop press announcement from Dotty.

The Wanganui River Queen premiere will be on April 1st 2006. The film has its national launch in Auckland Wellington and Christchurch, then proceeds triumphantly through Hamilton, Palmerston North, and a few other towns slightly bigger than Wanganui. By the time it reaches us, the rest of New Zealand will be desperate to see it one last time, and are expected to boost attendance numbers at the Embassy by 0.00034%.
This glorious day for Wanganui can only be attributed to the wonderful leadership of Mayor Michael.

Ha! That'll show those genetic deficients in Raetihi!!

I see in the Chron's letters that Chester doesn't share Dottie's lack of excitement about national election matters.

"Who'd have thought tax policy release could be so exciting," gushes Chester Burrows (or should that be Chester Borrows-to-pay-for-wild-election-bribes-to-the-greedy?)

"Stop press announcement from Dotty: The Wanganui River Queen premiere will be on April 1st 2006."

Hope someone has sent this to the Chron. With an impeccable source like Dotty, they're bound to turn it into the lead story tomorrow and put Dave Laurence's name on it.

...is that the same Chester Borrows espied by LawsWatch skulking home from the newsagents with a copy of the "Taxation (Accrual Rules and Other Remedial Matters) Act 1999 under his arm in a plain brown wrapper?!

Actors are often pretty reluctant to help right-wing snake-oil salesmen win votes in by-elections.

You don't suppose that has anything to do with it, do you?

Sobering thought, this.

Is Peters Being Used As A Pawn in Al-Qaeda's Game?
By Paul G. Buchanan

New Zealand has a clear threat to its national security, in the guise of an MP who unconsciously, indirectly as it may be, advances the Islamicist extremist cause. That MP is the Right Honourable Member of Parliament from Tauranga, Leader of New Zealand First, Mr. Winston Peters.

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0508/S00074.htm

At least no Watchers have yet indicated in the poll that they'll be tossing their party vote in the direction of Winston First.

Anonymous said...

Yes, when are the SIS going to focus on the real threat to NZ: the divisive bigotry of Peters and his political allies.

Laws Watch said...

Peters and his political allies

Allies? Come on now, it's a little over the top to expect the SIS to start searching colostomy bags.

Hey, you Watchers really are everywhere, aren't you. Does LawsWatch pick up your bar tab? Heard a couple of you have been seen at Stella, too.

Do you really have the key to the mayoral dunny also?

sorry to point out the blatently obvious..but is a film festival the same as a world premier?? all ive heard about today is the movie is going to be shown at a festival in canada..are we seeing a conspiracy where there isnt one..i would have expected any movie to be shown at cannes or other festivals regardless of whether they had been oficially launched as these are all part of marketing the film..festivals, premiers, hype, made up controversy (the director leaving.),alleged romantic liaisons between the leading lady / man....hold on theres another word for that...yes.. thats right.. its SPIN isnt it!!..

Anonymous said...

Do u mean that Laws watch is a bit slanted? Really? No wonder 3 legged donkeys like me can stand up straight in here!

Anonymous said...

Hi Donk

Good to have you back - but you need to consult the Donkey Dictionary Ior LawsWatch home page) for the answer to your question:

world (n)
The earth.
The universe.
The earth with its inhabitants.
The inhabitants of the earth; the human race.

pre·miere or pre·mière(n)
The first public performance, as of a movie or play.

Laws Watch said...

Slanted?! Nothing about LawsWatch is slanted till after our third drink, then everything looks a little odd.

Anyway, we're taking as our source no less an authority than the Director of said movie, Vincent Ward, who's quoted in the Chron as saying "I’m pleased that... the film will premiere at one of the world’s leading film festivals."

Our authority on Hollywood stuff: acclaimed director Vincent Ward.

3 legged donkeys' apparent authority on Hollywood stuff: Dotty.

As our favourite Hollywood source David Hartnell says, though, we're not one to gossip.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but I'd say he hasn't got a leg to stand on, whichever way you look at it.

Anonymous said...

The thing everyone is missing here is the remarks Laws made at the annual plan when RQ came up. He said (and this is a direct quote) "we could spend that [$150,000] money better elsewhere" when talking about the premiere. It surprised me at the time because I thought he'd be all behind it but if the mayor is diffident then, who knows? Its the RQ producers that might have just shat in their nest.

Anonymous said...

The CEO announcement. Word is the Chron has got the press kit, and its an internal appt. Good of them to let the staff know first!

Anonymous said...

Actually Threelegged is right. As a bit of a film buff, film festival entries aren't regarded by the industry as premieres. They're about winning advance recognition from critics & generating advance publicity. Cannes and Sundance are good examples.
That said, I'd bet Vicent Ward never discussed his release with the producers before he went public. No love lost there - remember they fired him and then brought him back under sufferance.
Taking a long view, a premiere could put Wangavegas on the map but only if there's a related marketing campaign. If not, it's throwing good money at an average piss-up.

Anonymous said...

Hear hear. $150,000 simply isn't enough. We would be better spending it elsewhere. Remember the original estimate was $750,000, and I bet that's paltry compared to what the yanks are used to.

Anonymous said...

"we could spend that [$150,000] money better elsewhere"

I seem to recall he (quite rightly) got the pip over the crap economic benefits assessment that was tabled at one stage. Yet they went ahead anyway. So are you saying Dotty was the driver and the pending trainwreck is her fault?

Anonymous said...

" Word is the Chron has got the press kit ,,"

I bet they're tossing a coin right now in the newsroom to see whose name goes on top of the press release.

Internal appointment, eh? My money's on Shackleton.

Anonymous said...

"Cannes and Sundance are good examples."

I don't remember LOTR debuting at any film festival.

Anonymous said...

In reply: Laws doesn't carry his council all the time. I've seen him outvoted around the table a few times.
Which unfortunately probably proves someone else's point that its not the mayor but the ENTIRE council that's the worry. I read my minutes and the McGregor, Wills, Dahyas, Stevens etc are usually all in the Ayes lobby.

Anonymous said...

No, LOTR didn't. Different type of film, very commercial. Whalerider did, and so did The Piano. This is a Ward film, so it'll fit in the latter company. As much arthouse as entertainment, knowing Vincent.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Shackleton, which would figure if they want a slighter yoiunger Whitlock technocrat. There are other internals that fit the profile like Kevin Ross. Finance manager Dave Foster was being groomed until he tangled with the mayor and we all know how that ended up.

Anonymous said...

I'd be more impressed by Cliff Curtis' reputed remarks if he'd fronted up his own $ for the gallery and not crashed his car while texting to his ex-girlfriend.

Anonymous said...

Finance manager Dave Foster was being groomed until he tangled with the mayor and we all know how that ended up.

Yes, it ended up with Foster being sought after for a very respectable position in Wgtn. Take that Michael.

Anonymous said...

ok anonomayii and LW points taken...i still have not seen any admission from the powers that be that the world premier (the first public showing where you invite the media and market to the public) is not happening...anyway...surely not shackleton!

Anonymous said...

No, it's not Shackleton - that much I do know. So, who does that leave? Not Kevin Ross, surely?

The word is that despite what Dotty's saying, the recruiters had to do a lot of shoulder-tapping to get any half-way credible candidates. And a good number of them ran a mile when they realised they were being steered into Diva country.

Anonymous said...

Hey Donkey, you're not saying that the media and the stars won't be at Toronto, are you?

Anonymous said...

no..just that both events are aimed at differing markets..

Anonymous said...

Foster? Respectable position in Wellington? Ah, no - off to PN City Council as second tier finance officer and then to the Audit Office in similar position.
Whatever you might accuse the mayor, he had Foster's measure very early on and he was right.

Anonymous said...

Kevin Ross is Colin's protege.
He'd be a safe pair of hands as CEO.

Anonymous said...

You can add that Kevin Ross and the mayor went to school together - Wanganui Boys.

Anonymous said...

then to the Audit Office

Are you seriously suggesting that if Laws was right Foster would have been head-hunted by the Audit Office?

Anonymous said...

I was there when ML was singing Foster's praises at the annual plan meeting and saying how they had to take advantage of his vast experience and learn as much as possible from him before he left.

It didn't look to me as though ML was putting on an act. He seemed genuinely sorry that Foster was going.

Anonymous said...

So why did Foster take a much lesser position at Palm North?
And the AO headhunts anyone with an accountants degree - like the Police, they're desperate.

Anonymous said...

Distraction, people. Back to the real issue. Laws being right (again) over his RQ qualms. There are times I think he'll make a fine mayor - esp if he puts a door charge on the gallery and sells all that crap in its bowels.

Anonymous said...

"No, it's not Shackleton - that much I do know. So, who does that leave? Not Kevin Ross, surely"

There are only two possible internal appointments, Kevin Ross and Rowan McGregor. My moneys on McGregor if the internal appointment rumour is factual- but I have extreme doubts that it is/

Anonymous said...

Distraction, people. Back to the real issue. Laws being right (again) over his RQ qualms.

So, you're saying Laws had qualms but just muttered to himself (and you) and then sat back and watch Dotty steer the engine into a trainwreck. You sound to me like you're covered in that crap of which you speak as a result of spending far too much time up the Diva's rectum. Hose yourself off and get out of there before it's too late.

Anonymous said...

Mate, its people like me who elected Laws & his team and we love what they're doing to you & yours.

Anonymous said...

"Hose yourself off and get out of there before it's too late."

Yes, you need to make way now for the new CEO who will have figured out where he needs to position himself if he's going to survive, and it ain't pretty.

Ah, a typical member of Lawsmob. Hello, mate. Laws can't do anything while he's got his head up his arse keeping you company.

How are we to assess the benefits to Whanganui of spending $150,000 on a big (well, small) movie party? The "event" has been marketed to us ratepayers as a way to put Whanganui "on the map". Right now it looks like more a way to put diVisionaries next to movie stars while the Chron. takes pictures. Will DiVision's by-election candidate somehow "happen" to end up in any of these pieces of marketing material?

Just asking.

Anonymous said...

The timing is beautiful. Weep, Carol.

Anonymous said...

It's Wanganui you're damaging, you fuckwit: Carol's doing fine.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, just back in town and catching up on what's going on at council.

Someone said here last night that the Chron knew who'd got the CEO's job and that it was an inside appointment.

Having read the Chron this morning I have to say that looked like a typical smart-arse posting by Michael, and I see he's just been back here again throwing out more red herrings about Carol.

It's amazing to me that with his ability to dominate the media, especially the Chron, he still needs to lurk around this blog making all those ridiculous posts. I guess it shows LawsWatch has really got him worried.

Anonymous said...

The new CEO hasn't even negotiated a contract yet. I bet they put up all sorts of conditions like "Michael, leave my staff alone."

Anonymous said...

Re the by-election:
Does anyone know if John Martin is going to stand?

I see there's been a great response to the LawsWatch poll on who would have the most support as a candidate and he's pulling out in front with 32% of the 116 votes. Jodie Dalgleish is second on 28% and Carla Donson third with 10%.

Reading Dotty's column in the River City Press it's obvious diVision is worried about him and she's already going on the offensive.

Anonymous said...

Where does Dotty McKinnon get off using Council resources for party political purposes? We had high hopes for you, Dot. Why are you behaving so shabbily?

Anonymous said...

John Martin looks like a pretty good bet for council. He's got actual experience with leadership, too, unlike Mickey Mayor.

Anonymous said...

You mean he knows what its like to be unemployed - like all you other arty wankers. He's a great rep for you.

Anonymous said...

It's not just party political purposes. Dotty's not averse to using that column for personal business purposes, I've noticed.

But then that's what you get with a bunch of spin doctors running the city.

Speaking of which, how the hell can they get away with all that hype about referendum topics running at the same as the by-election campaign and then ending up in the same envelopes as the election papers?

It's straight-out manipulation of what should be a democratic election. I hope the auditor general or someone is going to look at this one.

Anonymous said...

JM's no more unemployed than I'm an artist, petal. You need a new script. Hasn't Mickey written it for you?

Anonymous said...

The Auditor General is a waste of space: they'll only act after the event. This shit needs a court injunction.

Latest Rumour:

Carol Webb has today been appointed the new CEO at Wanganui District Council. She is going to do this while also keeping her full time job. Will be foreging the salary to put money into raising the profile of Wanganui.

Only unsual clause in employment contract is a no-sex clause with the mayor.

Remember you read it here first!!!! The Chron misses out again!

PS Sorry today is very boring and I have nothing better to do with my time

Anonymous said...

Of the candidates Vision can drag up for the by-election, which ones would give JM the most trouble?

Bobbie Walker?
Alan Taylor?

And the nominees are?

Anonymous said...

Jodie should be the candidate. John Martin agrees with whoever spoke to him last. He won't be able to handle the mayor - intellectually, verbally or politically. Laws will make a dishrag of him. Jodie is his match.

Anonymous said...

Have to agree with anon. Whatever his qualities, John isn't in the same street as this mayor who would dominate him easily. Jodie Dalgleish or Carla Donson would be better councillors and that's what we're looking for - councillors not candidates.

Anonymous said...

Jodi's profile isn't high enough. She'd be bettr off waiting 'til she can appear as something other than the "arts" candidate.

Anonymous said...

Crap! She's a businesswoman, a writer AND a gallery owner. Sick of the Martin fogies coming here and dissing Jodie. What's the matter John? Scared?

Anonymous said...

Jodie wasn't particularly keen to split the vote last time I talked to her. Don't you think you should make sure she's actually standing before tossing these wild statements about.

John Martin is steady and honest; all Laws can do is bullshit: his crap ill-prepared performance in front of the Lions shows that. It seems likely that Mickey Mayor will be subjected to so much heckling he'd better go to the Gold Coast during the by-election. He'll be a complete jonah for any diVision candidate now.

Anon, I don't believe you're one of Jodie's supporters, I think you're a dead dog 'round her neck, with your divisive crap.

Anonymous said...

The thing everyone is missing here is the remarks Laws made at the annual plan when RQ came up. He said (and this is a direct quote) "we could spend that [$150,000] money better elsewhere"

I bet that was Dotty's punishment for putting him back on the leash during the CoC back-room deal.
