Spot the difference II

Seems normally hard-working Sean Hoskins and his newsroom confederates were on strike yesterday, and thus not reporting goings-on at City Hall.

We wouldn't be so unkind as to ask if anyone noticed the difference in their newspaper this morning, as we know the Chron newsroom does it's best to get the odd bit of truth through the editorial process. And we're assured the Editor doesn't really have a "WWDWD" (What would the Diva want me to do?) plaque on his desk.

Writing for any newspaper is one of the most poorly paid and least appreciated professions (unless of course you're a "columnist", paid to spout drivel which would barely rate a 'C' in a Year 11 essay contest), which is no way to foster intelligent and probing journalism. Not to mention the proprietors keeping the cupboard so bare that investigative journalism is simply unaffordable, which of course suits those in power perfectly.

The company that owns the Chron made $142.8 million profit last year. We think throwing Sean and his mates a dog biscuit isn't too much to ask.

Thanks for connecting the dots again LawsWatch. It's good to see someone is keeping them honest.

Go Sean!

Laws would get paid more to write one column a week than Sean is paid for full-time work. Pity the poor journo.

Yeah, but Laws thinks that means something about their relative worth, the snob.

Sean has done more for his colleagues with his union work than Laws will ever do by his own labour, but Laws donates to charity. Laws writes worthless puff pieces; Sean tries to get news past his censor-in-chief. Laws likes causing trouble. Sean causes trouble for Laws when he's had a few ales.

Money isn't everything.

There's no animosity between the mayor and Sean Hoskins. Laws likes the "larrikin" as he calls him - said at a council meeting that Sean reminded him of his undergrad days at Otago. Just better dressed.

... don't forget the special friendship of Helen and sean ...

What about the special friendship of Helen and Jodie? Stop seeing conspiracy everywhere or none of us will be able to socialise ever again.

Hear, hear.
You could put so many people together in this town if they shared a cardboard plonk and a canape at some crappy cocktail party. Gee like Carol and Michael.

Tell us about the F-L-A-G ...
i keep checking in every hour (addictive innit it) to hear more on the King Fahd/King Laws contretemps and everyone keeps chatting about everything but ...
Brit Bunkley, you must know. You hate Bush (I'm sure he was bad to yo mama) - tell us why the council aluted a dead despot.

anon: "said at a council meeting that Sean reminded him of his undergrad days at Otago. Just better dressed."

Jeez, what's Sean done to deserve that. Laws was the fascist, pathetic undergrad of Otago who wanked his way through, polishing his putdown skills in the debating club. Sean shows no sign of such fascist tendency, nor is he a wannabe wanker. Now as for Morgs .. well that is a different story. Perhaps Michael was getting them confused.

Here's what an Otago "celeb" graduate report has to say about the embarr

"What can be said about Michael Laws? His CV does read like a bit of a joke, especially when you hear that his wife writes erotic fiction ..."

I wouldn't call a first class honours degree from Otago, a wank.
As for his CV - it was the one that got him elected, dweeb.

The FLAG???????????????????????????

Anonymous said...

I think you may have heard all there is to hear about the flag. Laws ordered it lowered, other people "at council" were unhappy. Unless the parties involved give us some clarification we know as much as you do. Even then, I'm not convinced it's worth staying up all night for.

I watched a TV doco on the Springbok Tour of 1981 where they mentioned our current mayor. Apparently he led the pro-Tour group who overturned all anti-Tour policy on campus and had the Red Squad billetted at halls of residence. So he's obviously carried even liberal institutions in the past. Or were all Otago students fascists, too??

Anonymous said...

Who was unhappy it was lowered? Why don't they speak out. Why did Laws order it lowered?

Anonymous said...

Pretty much everyone at university is a wanker, if my memory serves me correctly.

Anonymous said...

So true. As a former undergraduate, I can attest to that. None of us had a modicum of thought beyond ourselves.

I'm interested in the flag issue, too. C'mon LawsWatch - you have your council sources. Give them a bit of a rark-up and find out why dead Arabs get the council dipping their flag to half mast.

Kind Fraud is a funny old name
To lower the flag is a shame
For Arabian soil
Seeps with blood tears and oil
And our children may yet wear the blame.

TAPLOL.

What's TAPLOL, Matt?

Superb reading. I followed it back a few days and have now bookmarked it.

The FLAG??????????????????????

You are a Laws Watcher. Call the Council and ask them. It was on the outside of their building, and can therefore hardly count as a state secret.

When you find out, leave a comment and put us all out of our misery :-)

Who do I 'phone?

9:19 PM

Mayor Michael's contact details

Anonymous said...

Yeah, he's going to tell me!

Anonymous said...

It's called direct democracy mate!

Yeah, he's going to tell me!

9:30 PM

Why wouldn't he? He stood on his personality, and everything he says is "just his personal opinion", so why would it matter what the reason was? Clever, no?

Anonymous said...

I'll send him an e-mail - will share the response.

Vandals attacked the peace sculpture.
Vandalds? Or extremely discerning art critics?

Anonymous said...

No. Laws voters. Remember to destroy something you don't understand every day.

Anonymous said...

No, art critics.
It was embarrassing.

Your opinion is worthless.
